Today we’d like to introduce you to Norbert Mede, Tony Kuhn, And Joseph Lewis
Norbert Mede, Tony Kuhn, and Joseph Lewis, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The story of Hotel Pontotoc is as much about the preservation of Memphis history as it is about reimagining what hospitality can mean in a modern city. Hotel Pontotoc was originally built in 1906 as a European-style hotel catering to railway and riverboat travelers. Since then, the building has served as a Turkish bathhouse, an elegant bordello, a vibrant nightclub, a family home and recording studio, and more.
Over the years, the building gained a reputation for its ghostly whispers, charm, and storied past. When we first encountered the property, it was clear that it was more than just a building… it was a piece of Memphis’ soul waiting to be revived.
Tony Kuhn and Joseph Lewis, both with deep ties to the Memphis community, saw the potential and envisioned Hotel Pontotoc as a boutique hotspot that would honor Memphis’ rich history while offering something unique to today’s travelers.
Norbert Mede joined the team as General Manager to help bring that vision to life, drawing on his experience in the hospitality industry and passion for creating exceptional experiences for his guests
From the start, our goal was to strike a delicate balance: preserving the character of the Pontotoc while transforming it into a contemporary destination. The building’s history served as our guide. Every design choice, from the carefully restored woodwork to the incorporation of local art, reflects our commitment to celebrating Hotel Pontotoc’s past while crafting a space that feels timeless.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Restoration projects are never easy, and the Hotel Pontotoc was no exception. From the outset, we knew we were working against the clock and the elements. While the building’s bones were strong, decades of wear and tear presented significant challenges.
One of the biggest hurdles was the timeline for renovation. We wanted to make the space functional while doing justice to the history embedded in its walls. For example, the original grand staircase and historic masonry exterior required painstaking restoration by artisans who understood the value of craftsmanship. We also encountered surprises, as you do with any century-old building.
Beyond the physical restoration, there was also an opportunity to tell Hotel Pontotoc’s story in a way that felt authentic. We wanted to preserve its history without veering into kitsch or cliché. The ghosts, the rumors about Elvis – these stories are fascinating, but we needed to weave them into the fabric of a modern hospitality experience that speaks to today’s travelers.
Every obstacle has been an opportunity to dig deeper and find creative solutions. Seeing Hotel Pontotoc come back to life has been worth every moment of uncertainty and every late-night planning session.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Hotel Pontotoc offers more than a place to stay. From the moment you walk through the doors, you’re stepping into a space that feels like a secret waiting to be discovered.
We’ve leaned into Hotel Pontotoc’s intimate scale to create something unique. The hotel is home to The Dame, our signature cocktail lounge, which feels like a private retreat hidden in plain sight. With its curated menu of classic and innovative drinks, eclectic wine list and local beer selections, The Dame invites guests to linger, connect, and soak in the atmosphere. Just beyond, our outdoor patio offers a place where you can enjoy a quiet moment amidst the bustle of Downtown Memphis.
What sets Hotel Pontotoc apart is its character. This isn’t a cookie-cutter hotel. Every detail, from the décor to the service, has been thoughtfully designed to create a sense of intimacy and connection. Our rooms offer a blend of historic charm and modern comfort, and we’ve taken care to ensure that every corner of the hotel tells a story.
We’re particularly proud of how we’ve embraced Hotel Pontotoc’s past. The stories formed here add an element of intrigue that you won’t find anywhere else. And while we celebrate the past, we’re also focused on creating hospitality that feels fresh and inviting.
At its core, Hotel Pontotoc is about connection – connection to history, to place, and to one another. We want our guests to leave feeling like they’ve discovered something truly special, a hidden gem in the heart of Memphis.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The hospitality industry is constantly evolving, and we’re excited to be part of that evolution. Over the next decade, we anticipate a few key trends shaping the way hotels operate.
One of the biggest shifts is the rise of personalization. Guests today want experiences that feel tailored to their interests and needs. At Hotel Pontotoc, we’re already leaning into this trend by offering curated recommendations, personalized service, and unique touches that make every stay memorable.
Technology will also play a significant role. We have updated the property to match travelers expectations and are finding new ways to use technology to enhance the guests’ stay. At the same time, there’s a growing emphasis on maintaining a human touch. We must balance these advancements with the kind of warmth and hospitality that can’t be automated.
Finally, we believe there will be a continued focus on authenticity. Guests are looking for more than just luxury – they’re looking for meaning. Hotels that can tell a compelling story, like Hotel Pontotoc, will have a unique advantage in a market that values individuality and character.
As we look to the future, we’re committed to staying ahead of these trends while remaining true to what makes Hotel Pontotoc special – our history, our community, and our dedication to creating unforgettable experiences.
