Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert D. Harris.
Hi Robert, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I am the founder and lead design strategist for VytoCor Web Solutions.
I have a rather interesting story as to how I transitioned to the design world. As a classically trained violinist, I had been working in the music/arts industry throughout high school/college. During my junior year in college (University of Memphis), I built a web-based platform that allowed companies to license my work, sign an agreement, and make payments directly on my website. After showing this to the director of the local music foundation, he asked if I ever thought about offering this service to other artists. This had never really come up in any other conversations but turned out to be a great idea. Prior to launching the company, I had done freelance design work for other artists in the industry. To my surprise, things took off.
I officially launched VytoCor back in September of 2012. Initially, the company was slated as a web hosting company. Customers would often approach us about compounded services and we finally listened. Having a strong background in design, I strategically integrated web and graphic design services into our offerings. The growth of the company accelerated rapidly…. and here we are today.
My ultimate goal was to always have an avenue for creating artistically. Transitioning from creating music to digital design was the perfect route.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say that the greatest obstacle I’ve had to overcome while operating the design agency would be transitioning from a space of working WITHIN the company to working ON the company. Most business owners frown at the thought of having to cut individual profits and share them with employees, partners, or contractors. It’s not an easy thing to start delegating tasks, but it’s more than mandatory if you have plans of scaling. Over time, I’ve learned that life has its way of forcing you to learn discipline and patience. Building any company (to a place of true success) takes a heightened level of commitment and tenacity. If you don’t develop some level of resilience, life will pummel you into submission for sure
Both business and life are full of ebbs and flows. I’ve learned that nothing happens overnight, so stay the course. I would also say that building solid systems within any business is a BIG DEAL. Believe it or not, applying that same strategy to your personal life has also proven to be fruitful.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
