Hidden Gems: Meet Ryan Olson of Damage Media Group and Uproar Recording

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Olson.

Hi Ryan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Where to start! I moved all over the country as a kid and settled in a little town next to Indianapolis, IN. I grew up there. From the age of fourteen, I played drums in bands in the local scene. Two of them actually being signed to different labels. So music was a huge part of my life. I thought that was what I was going to be! I’m a rockstar, but after several tours and playing shows all over the country, the chemistry in the group I was in fell apart, leaving me wondering what I should do!

So when I was around 18-19 years old I started going to school at Azmyth School of Recording Technology in Indianapolis. That’s where I fell in love with audio engineering. Under the mentorship of Ryan Adkins and Travis “Koldkut” Moore, I developed skills that would help me get my start in the industry. Several years later, I moved to Memphis, TN with my fiancé.

I didn’t know a single person moving here. It was scary and exciting. I made the most of it and after some time developed relationships that would help me work at a couple of studios in the area. In that time I created a decent client base and wanted to start my own business. By fate, I met with Jackson Henderson, by way of his podcast “Romero Records” and cultivated a dream that a year later would take flight.

Just last month we opened our business in Bartlett called “Damage Media Group.” We help artists with all aspects of the music industry and I still record, mix and master music under Uproar Recording.

We still have a ton more to accomplish but we are on our way.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road. When I moved here from Indianapolis, I didn’t know a single person. This was very difficult because I am a very social person and value my friends.

Also, I didn’t have any clients out here so I had to meet everyone myself and try to get referrals from them. Luckily we live in a world where everyone is at the tips of our fingers. Life is full of struggle, we learn from it and grow from it.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
So, I started Uproar Recording several years ago under a different name but changed it due to branding. I am the owner and operator. I am an audio engineer that records, mixes, and masters anything that has to do with audio! I think my clients come to me because they know I truly care about them and their music.

I want to see them succeed. I also co-own Damage Media Group with Jackson Henderson. We specialize in helping artists with music production, music videos, and helping them create a plan to help them succeed. We are basically a one-stop-shop for all musicians trying to get their foot in the door.
