Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherbert Ratliff.
Hi Sherbert, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a native Memphian that loves to help women feel more beautiful. As far back as eight years old, I can remember going with my mom to her salon appointments then being home and having my mom teach me how to trim her hair, manipulate manual marcel curling irons and practice finger waves on her.
I began working in a salon at the age of 14. I loved it! It was fulfilling to learn and do so much. I think I did every hairstyle and cut that was trending during those times. I did take Cosmetology during my 10th and 11th-grade years of high school as part of my yearly credits. I didn’t finish there. I still needed about one more year, so after I graduated high school I went to Hamilton High during the summer. Because my hours were not complete by summer’s end, I went on to Booker T. Washington High and completed my cosmetology hours there.
In the midst of completing my hours there, I had to take a break because I had given birth to my first child; a beautiful healthy 7 Lb 5oz girl! Yep, I was three months pregnant at my high school graduation that prior to May. She was born in November. Needless to say, I had a loving mom and sister who saw fit I completed my cosmetology hours, and for that, I am sincerely grateful to God.
I’ve been happily married for 16 yrs and we have two beautiful children!
As far as my career, I’ve been in the beauty industry as Freelance Educator, Cosmetologist, and Color/Correction Specialist for more than 20 years. For the past 10 years, my focus has been on caring for and treating Textured-Hair (wavy to coily) and Hair Color/Correction for ladies facing the challenges that include shrinkage, frizz, and hair and/or scalp dryness and damage.
During my personal time, I enjoy spending time with my supportive husband, son, and mom along with talking to my daughter who is now in another state building her career. I serve and support my community by taking a stand for what’s right. I also serve in the music ministry at my local church, using my voice to give back to God in hopes of helping others to live in holiness unto Him.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the major obstacles, I would say my husband and I faced that took us the journey of more than 20 years to open our own salon was was mismanagement of personal funds. It’s so important to manage your household like a business. If that’s not in order, you can forget about opening and sustaining a business.
Once we got that in order, I would say opening the salon was pretty smooth. Thanks to God for our business coaches we incurred no debt, no struggles. And boy were we blessed by that. Of course, this more than one-year-long current pandemic took us and many business owners through challenges we never expected but managing our funds appropriately really helped. We did and still do rely on God and our business coaches to guide us through processes to assure we avoid some of the common mistakes business owners make.

It has always been my goal to create a space that would provide a relaxing, yet personable atmosphere where women would feel safe and heard while continuing to focus on the Textured-Hair challenges many of them faced. In 2019, my husband and I had that space became reality as LIMITLESS Naturals Salon.
LIMITLESS Naturals Salon is a full-service one guest at a time specialty salon for the Textured-hair Professional Woman who desires decreased shrinkage and frizz, defined curls and coils that last, and those who want to learn how to easily duplicate their hair at home. Tailored Hair Cutting and Custom Color/Correction Services are also available as add-ons.

My mom always told me and my sister that whatever we put our hands on to be the best. Remember to take pride (in a sense of excellence, not boasting) in everything you do. You will make mistakes and have challenges along the way, so learn from them and remember, these are the building blocks that help you excel.
