Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Smalley.
Hi Ashley, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up running around my family’s furniture store, I was always crafting with discontinued wallpaper books, having my mom make sleeping bags for my dolls out of fabric scraps, layering old rug samples in my American Girl Dolls house. After graduating and owning my own clothing store, briefly taking time at home to have babies, I was back working in clothing. After my husband and I started renovating and selling our home I realized maybe I need to get out of clothing and get back into homes. I developed this passion for renovation, picking paint colors, working with fabrics and furniture layouts. Once my children were both in school, I was doing a little design on the side, I decided to leave my full time job and open back up the family furniture store with my mom in 2021. Working together we just immediately connected and our business was busier than ever. January 1, 2025 I purchased the business 100% from my mom and became the new owner of The Feathered Nest.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have been so pleasantly surprised at how our business has grown. Of course we have navigated through the growing pains of business ownership, I am a firm believer in it’s all how you react and deal with trials.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I have learned is showing my children it is never too late to change your career path.
