Inspiring Conversations with Jackson Henderson of Romera Records/Damage Media Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackson Henderson.

Hi Jackson, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
My name is Jackson Romera Henderson. I was born on July 13th, 1992. I grew up in Oneonta, Alabama. My parents, Romera and Mary Henderson, would always help me and encourage me to do everything that I wanted to do. I remember my mother always saying that I could do anything I wanted to do. I took that literally because as I grew up, I noticed I was interested in everything and tried to do everything. As a young adult, I would try to figure out ways to make money and save money. I was always business minded. My family was a lower-middle-class family. We didn’t have everything we wanted but we had everything we needed. I played many sports growing up but mainly focused on football. After I graduated high school, I needed to make a decision if I was going to play college football or not. I decided not to, and I went to Jacksonville State University and majored in Business Management. During college, I made some friends working at the local Pizza Hut. They made music and I was kinda drawn to what they had going. I made a song with them, but I decided I didn’t want to continue with doing music. After college, I joined the Air Force in 2015 and was stationed in Minot, North Dakota. There I would pick back up with doing music again. I found out other people do music and we started learning recording, mixing, mastering, production, and everything in-between. I would then decide to start my own label, Romera Records. After the military, I started a program called the Academy of Advanced Manufacturing. It taught military veterans how to work in the automation/manufacturing industry. I got a job in Memphis, Tennessee as an Electrical Maintenance Technician at Owens Corning in 2019. This job earned me enough money to fund my business of Romera Records to have better equipment and work with other people. I built a home studio and started doing music, audiobooks, voiceovers, and podcasts. Around September of 2020, I ended up doing a podcast with a guy named Ryan Olson, we started to talk frequently then he inquired about us starting a business together. He runs Uproar Recording and has a pretty decent client base. I didn’t know what I could contribute to a new business until we realized what we could do. I had camera equipment and started learning about the music business more and more. I even attended Full Sail University for Music Business and recently got my associate degree and started working on my bachelor’s. I learned about publishing, copyright, artist management, and many other things that go into the music business. I started doing photography and videography under Romera Records but then realized I should start putting all my visual work under this new entity that Ryan and I were making. We ended naming our new company Damage Media Group and began working under that name as of September of 2021. This new company is a one-stop-shop for artists to get professional videos, photos, interviews, and learn about the music business from recording, production, how to make money, how to manage themselves, and more. We recently just leased a building in Bartlett, Tennessee, and it’s under construction to become a facility for artists in the Memphis area to thrive.

We all face challenges but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road but I haven’t had to deal with true heartache like most business owners. I have been trying to manage my two businesses while still working at Owens Corning and finishing my bachelor’s degree in Music Business. I have to manage my time wisely because all these things tend to overlap and run together. Damage Media Group recently had a major issue getting our facility because no one had the right building for us, or they just weren’t allowing us to be there. It was a struggle and long process, but we are excited to move forward.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Romera Records is a company I started to represent me as an artist and professional. My artist’s name is Supa Hendo. I was a huge fan of the Dragon Ball tv-series growing up as a kid and I loved the idea of transforming myself into a different person when I record music. The “Supa” is a resemblance of a super sayain from the tv show and “Hendo” is short for my last name. I currently do voiceovers, record, and produce music, podcast, and audiobooks. The podcast is something that is starting to pick up steam in the Memphis area because people have a voice and they want to be heard. My podcast is something that is more like a conversation between me and my guest instead of a true interview.

Damage Media Group is the business of representing artists as a label, publisher, copyrighter, and education academy. DMG also offers the services of videography/photography. All of these elements enable artists in the area to build a relationship with one brand to help them grow as an artist and learn what it takes to have a successful career. I am especially proud of being able to move to an area where I have no connections, create my own lane, and develop the skills to grow my business into a staple for many years to come. DMG will be an all-access music company for artists to go from absolutely no knowledge to being able to manage themselves. I believe with the right time and effort DMG will be a name to know across the country for its excellent service, influence, and environment.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is helping other people accomplish their dreams. I have always wanted to help people mentally and physically. I used to be a personal trainer and I enjoyed getting people to their goal of physical fitness. Now I enjoy helping creatives build a community for sharing ideas and talent. This world is full of people who have so much talent but don’t know what they are supposed to do with it. I want to help bridge that gap so that it is an easier segway for someone to start their business as a younger person instead of waiting until they are past their prime. It is so important to me for people to live their lives to the fullest while they have the opportunity to do it because we are never promised another day. I make sure that every day I do something that helps someone else accomplish their goals and dreams. In return, this satisfies my own internal goals.
