Today we’d like to introduce you to Kameta Hopkins.
Hi Kameta, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always been drawn to numbers and entrepreneurship. As a child, I created small businesses — selling snow cones and snacks to neighbors and classmates, and making handmade hair accessories and bows — anything that gave me what I viewed as freedom to earn and spend my own money. As a teenager, I began working in banking and naturally gravitated toward finance, money management, and entrepreneurial ventures.
I also began preparing tax returns for family members long before software was common. I would walk to the local library, pull IRS forms from the public stands, and complete returns by hand using pencil, paper, and my own calculations. No shortcuts — just knowledge, discipline, and precision.
After graduating college, I moved to Memphis for an accounting role at a local private bank. Memphis is where my corporate experience and entrepreneurial vision began to merge. Even while working in banking and accounting, I built my own client base from home and studied national brand standards to ensure I was building something structured and sustainable.
In 2005, KLHopkins Tax Services officially began. The name evolved in 2019 to KLHopkins Accounting Services to better reflect the scope of services provided.
From my first of several East Memphis offices on Winchester Road, to Southwind, and eventually prime retail space in Downtown Memphis, the business continued to grow. What started at a library table helping family members has grown into a trusted business serving individuals and small business owners across multiple industries and states.
Entrepreneurship was always part of my vision. Some of the family members I admired most were business owners, and I always saw myself building something of my own. Memphis gave me the space and opportunity to turn that vision into reality.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road.
In the beginning, capital was limited, and building a brand required patience and persistence. I balanced corporate roles, graduate school, and my goal of becoming a full-time business owner. During that time, I also operated other ventures, including a barber shop, real estate investments, and a Tennessee check casher’s license. Managing multiple businesses while building my financial services practice gave me firsthand experience in the realities my clients face — cash flow, staffing, compliance, and growth decisions.
I also recognized early on that in Memphis, many Black tax professionals were viewed through a limited lens. I was intentional about being an exception — building a business grounded in structure, professionalism, longevity, and strategic depth.
As a solo practitioner for years, I wore every hat — tax preparer, bookkeeper, financial strategist, marketer, administrator, and sometimes even collections.
There were times when clients did not pay, which forced me to strengthen my systems and boundaries.
I had my son during the season I was working to fully transition out of corporate America and into entrepreneurship. I was navigating new motherhood while building a business. Corporate life offers stability and benefits, especially as a parent, and I gained respect for that structure. But I also realized my superpower was not going to be completely satisfied in meeting rooms or at the office water cooler. It was in building, creating, and having something of my own.
Each challenge sharpened both me and the business. It forced stronger systems, clearer boundaries, and deeper confidence in the expertise I bring. And it continues to evolve.
We’ve been impressed with KLHopkins Accounting Services, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
KLHopkins Accounting Services provides tax preparation and business support services for individuals and small businesses seeking structure, compliance, and clarity in their financial lives.
We work with individuals, entrepreneurs, startups, service-based businesses, high-income wage earners, and those who may need assistance catching up on years of unfiled returns. Many clients come to us after outgrowing basic tax software or seasonal preparation and are ready for deeper insight, stronger organization, and long-term strategy. Others come to us at their wits’ end with tax debt or compliance issues, seeking a clear path forward. Some are preparing for major life transitions — parenthood, homeownership, launching a new business, or stepping into a new financial chapter — and want guidance that supports those next stages with confidence and structure.
What sets us apart is range and perspective. I bring experience from corporate accounting, banking, finance, real estate investing, and entrepreneurship, which allows me to understand not only the numbers, but the operational realities behind them. That breadth of experience translates into practical, actionable guidance — not just completed forms.
Over time, my work has consistently centered around entrepreneurs and business owners. That evolution has shaped what I describe as being an Accountant for Entrepreneurs. I don’t just prepare returns — I do taxes for entrepreneurs who are serious about structure, compliance, and long-term growth.
I am personable and intentional about meeting clients where they are. Whether someone is overwhelmed, rebuilding, or preparing for growth, I approach each situation with clarity, structure, and a genuine commitment to helping them move forward.
Being located in Downtown Memphis allows us to work closely with local residents and entrepreneurs who are building and growing businesses in our city. While Memphis is home, our services extend beyond Tennessee — we serve clients in all fifty states.
We value long-term relationships and take our responsibility seriously when it comes to confidentiality, professionalism, and consistency.
The brand is built on this commitment:
Professional, personalized, and confidential services — built for individuals, entrepreneurs, and growth-minded professionals.
We provide professional, personalized, and confidential service to every client we serve, with the goal of helping them move forward with clarity and confidence.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Starting a business requires more than talent — it requires patience, discipline, and awareness.
In the early years, I underestimated the importance of protecting my time, pricing appropriately, and asking the right questions. I wanted to prove myself, and in doing so, I sometimes overextended. Growth is not about saying yes to everything — it’s about building systems, setting boundaries, and serving well.
There will be seasons of stretching and seasons of stability. Both are necessary. Focus on doing the work well, even when no one is watching. Build something that can sustain you long after the excitement fades.
Longevity is built on discipline, not hype. Focus on consistency, integrity, and delivering real value. Over time, that foundation will speak louder than marketing ever could.
