Inspiring Conversations with Karen Lerma Moreno of Karen’s Sweets

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Lerma Moreno.

Karen Lerma Moreno

Hi Karen Lerma, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
How did Karen’s Sweets start from the beginning to what it is today? Karen’s Sweets is a small Latina-owned homemade bakery in Memphis, TN, that began in January 2020. We aim to bake fresh, authentic, and delicious desserts for any special occasion. We offer a variety of desserts for any occasion, such as cupcakes, chocolate-covered treats, and churro cheesecake. Karen’s Sweets provides catering services for weddings, birthday parties, baby showers, and graduation parties. A fun fact about Karen’s Sweets is that we have participated in two Showcases, the MLCC 360 EXPO and the Hispanic Business Student Association Showcase in the Memphis area.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Karen’s Sweets journey has been challenging. We have had our ups and downs. The first obstacle was definitely during COVID; sales were decreasing, and only a few orders were being made, but we still had to do more. We kept on having positive attitudes and hoped that it would pick up to how it once was. The second obstacle was being a small business owner while being a full-time student at the University of Memphis and working for Sherwin-Williams. However, no matter how difficult the road would get, I always fought for my dreams and found a way to make everything happen despite how stressed and burned I was from school or work; if I were to receive an order, I would always put my passion and dedication to all my orders.

As you know, we’re big fans of Karen’s Sweets. What can you tell our readers who might need to be more familiar with the brand?
Karen’s Sweets offers catering services for weddings, birthday parties, baby showers, and graduation parties. Our personalized or themed desserts are cupcakes, chocolate-covered strawberries, Oreos, Cakesicles, Cakepops, Pretzels, and churro/brownie bites for any special occasion.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
One of the most valuable qualities that is very important to my business is the determination and passion that you put into what you love doing. I love what I do, so I put all my time into baking and pastries. So, giving up is not an option if it means fighting for what you love. As my mom would say, “Never leave things half done; always finish them.”
