Today we’d like to introduce you to Mandii Brown. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Mandii Brown, also known as “The Relatable Counselor,” took an unexpected path to become one of the leading therapists and life coaches today. She began her career as an educator and academic advisor on the south side and west side of Chicago, driven by a passion for helping underserved youth. Though the work was rewarding, Mandii yearned to make an even greater impact. This led her to pursue a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from University of West Alabama while still teaching. Once the pandemic hit, she decided to transition to the Tennessee to work as a social worker and commute to Alabama for educational purposes. It was in this role that she found her true calling – empowering people through therapy and coaching.
Mandii brought an uncommon blend of empathy, straight talk, and humor to the counseling space. She forged deep connections with clients from all walks of life, helping them overcome trauma, anxiety, depression, and more through her signature brand of “relatable” therapy. She built a reliable network through working with local coalitions and non-profits to spread the message of the importance of mental health and breaking the stigma amongst people of color. With her new YouTube channel and current Instagram following from her videos on mental health, relationships, and personal development. Her message resonated: with hard work, self-love, and the support of a counselor who “gets it,” you can transform your life.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Mandii’s life has been full of ups and downs, yet she has persevered through it all. As a counselor, she has dedicated herself to guiding others through difficult times, providing a listening ear and words of wisdom. However, in her personal life, Mandii has faced her own storms – enduring the darkness of domestic abuse in its many insidious forms. The pain of cruel words and controlling behavior wounded her spirit, while physical violence left external and internal scars. Through it all, Mandii found an inner resolve, drawing on unknown wells of strength. A ray of light emerged when Mandii’s young son was diagnosed with disabilities requiring extra care and attention. While this news felt heavy at first, Mandii worked hard to educate herself and adapt. Leaning on friends and family for support, she built a “village” around all her children, filled with people who could help lift some of the weight off her shoulders. This experience revealed Mandii’s incredible resilience and ability to transform hardship into hope. Today, Mandii lifts her voice with confidence, empowered by the knowledge that she has survived so much. Her light shines brightly, illuminating the way for others experiencing their own dark nights of the soul. Mandii is a testament to the strength of the human spirit.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Networking and building connections is crucial for those looking to grow professionally in the counseling field. It’s important to connect with others who share your passion, but also those with different perspectives who you can learn from. There is rarely one singular approach when it comes to counseling, so being open-minded and willing to learn new techniques from seasoned clinicians is key. Start by looking locally – join Facebook groups, search Meetup.com events, and follow relevant hashtags on Instagram to find fellow counselors in your city. Attend conferences, seminars, and community events to meet practitioners face-to-face. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself and exchange contact info! Also, consider broadening your network outside your immediate region. Connecting with counselors from other states provides a chance to learn about different cultural contexts and new ideas. For example, Mandii has had the opportunity to collaborate with acclaimed counselors from the East Coast, like Mac Stanley Cazeau, a highly sought-after Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Certified Gottman Therapist in New York and Philadelphia. Learning under him has offered invaluable insight into new approaches to couples counseling and individual therapy. Pushing beyond your comfort zone to network both locally and further afield exposes you to diverse perspectives, methodologies, and experiences that will undoubtedly enrich your own counseling practice. Be open, be bold, and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! She also still has her connection with multiple mental health podcast platforms, her favorite still being “Black Men Cry Too”. This platform not only still advocates for black men and them connecting with clinicians, but also having a proper outlet to feel and let out their emotions in a healthy manner. Catherine Buccello, herself has been doing beautiful things in New York and is a great ally to have in all spaces. Networking and passion has brought them, and now their bond is so strong they can be considered family. Just as you need a village in your personal life, you need one professionally as well to be balanced.
