Inspiring Conversations with Melisa Horn of Hope Money Coaching

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melisa Horn

Hi Melisa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Melisa Horn, and I’m from the beautiful Mississippi Delta. My story begins with 16 and 17-year-old kids learning they would have a baby. I arrived nine months later, and they named me Melisa Hope. From the Mississippi Delta to the big city of Memphis, we moved. My family spans four generations of addiction and alcoholism, so my childhood was a little different. At the age of 7 or 8, I remember visiting family members who were incarcerated. While I didn’t fully understand the magnitude of the situation as a little girl, I vividly remember walking through a big gate and seeing bar-wired fencing. I will never forget the loud boom of the heavy steel door slamming behind us as we went in to visit a family member who I loved dearly.

My solace and safe place as a child was my grandma. I witnessed my grandmother work a full-time job, care for her bedridden mother in her home, serve in her church, and spend time with me. There was a period when I lived with her, and after we moved, I always found time to visit her regularly. There was never a time that I visited my grandma that she didn’t talk to me about Jesus, serving others, praying, and doing the right thing. As a grandmother myself now, I realize that observing how she served, loved, and helped people would profoundly impact my life. In January of 2001, I met Jesus personally and had a life-changing experience. Although my life has had many ups and downs, the one constant source of strength has been my relationship with Christ.

While I know my parents loved and cared for me the best, they could, I later learned that they never finished high school because they had me. As a result, I had a burning desire to get an education to care for myself, contribute to my family, and make sure I could care for my daughter and provide for her. I graduated from Arkansas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing. From there, I was blessed with a 25-year career in the financial services industry, where I was a consistent top performer, manager, and trainer. I had the opportunity to cultivate my skills in developing personal relationships with my customers, negotiating financial contracts, mentoring, and leading my team members. During my career, I also earned my credit counseling certification through the National Credit Union Association, served on a jail ministry team through my church, and was co-founder of a transitional home for women, Hope House Ministries. Later in my career, I joined a local nonprofit in Memphis to go behind bars at the Shelby County Jail East Women’s Facility in Memphis to teach women about personal finances and that there’s always Hope in Jesus Christ.

I am so grateful for my faith, family of origin, career, opportunities, and grandmother. They all were instrumental in my becoming the person and woman I am today. It was through my life’s journey that Hope House Ministries and Hope Money Coaching were born.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing worthwhile is ever easy, and neither was the road that brought me here. I was fortunate enough to learn from a family that had suffered from addiction, alcoholism, and incarceration. I encountered multiple obstacles as a child and as a younger woman:
• Bankruptcy and car repossession by my late twenties
• Two failed marriages
• Feelings of loneliness and hopelessness

I remember conversing with God, and I guess it wasn’t in the cards for me to have a significant other after two divorces, so I immersed myself in serving through my church. And just when I was minding my business, someone talked me into a blind date with a law enforcement veteran. I wasn’t interested because I was convinced God had other plans for me. I even canceled the blind date. Well, God had other plans, and I am so, so glad He did. I am the proud mother of a beautiful blended family and married to the love of my life, a Gulf War and a Law Enforcement Veteran.

I’ve had my share of obstacles and trauma that I’ve had to overcome to become who I am today. It wasn’t always easy; I viewed each struggle as an opportunity. With my unwavering faith in God, I became determined not to succumb to the same plights that span four generations of my family. Through all the challenges and struggles, God created a fire in me to make a difference in this world, help women and couples find peace with their finances, and start living purpose-driven lives! I focused on my work and became determined to dedicate my life to loving, helping, educating and serving people right where they are on their financial journey, whether needing clarity on where their money is going, getting out of debt, or learning how to save and better manage money.

It’s my passion to follow wherever God leads me to help transform people’s lives and minds through financial education and support.

This could involve working with women behind bars, holding corporate financial wellness workshops, providing one-on-one support to employees, teaching small groups, and working with women and couples.
