Inspiring Conversations with Mychael Pollard of WildFlower BakeShop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mychael Pollard.

Hi Mychael, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
A Love of Red Velvet Cake and not wanting to say no to a customer turned a hobby into a passion and thriving business that I never thought that I would be in. I began baking once I had my daughter, I started out simply trying to perfect a Red Velvet cake, the cake tasted great but the look of it was amateur. My goal was to make cakes that looked good but also cakes that taste good as well.

Fast forward to a few posts on social media and I had people wanting to order this scratch-made cake and it pushed me to want to learn more and offer more. I began exploring other creative sweet options and fell in love with decorative cookies after getting a request from a customer to add decorative cookies on with her cake, I told her of course but had no idea how to make them or what to do!

A few videos on Youtube and research on the web and I was intrigued, I taught myself how to make them and soon realized the possibilities with cookies were endless. Today Decorative Cookies have become the main focus of my business, I appreciate the creativity that it allows me to show and share with my customers in their special events.

Decorative Cookies have opened up so many opportunities for me with networking with other businesses and those in my field.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been interesting for sure, in the beginning, phases of my business, I was focused on creativity, the taste, the aesthetic, and not so much the business aspect of it. This posed a challenge because if I wanted to take this seriously I had to operate in the capacity of a true business and not a hobby.

I struggled initially with setting boundaries in my business and also wanted to accept every order I received. I learned early on it will cause burnout and how essential boundaries and proper policies and pricing are.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
WildFlower Bake Shop is based in Memphis, TN. We are known for amazing cookies, specifically a specialty for custom decorated sugar cookies. One thing that I absolutely believe that sets my business apart from others is the quality, I created a cookie that looks good in design and also one that will blow your taste buds out of the park, probably one of the best in the city and I am willing to bet it all on that.

What sets Wildflower BakeShop apart from others is that we are just getting started and I am looking forward to growing bigger and better. One thing that I am most proud of is that my product and customers speak for me, I am proud to say that most of my business comes from referrals from my customers, they know my value and that quality that I provide and that continues to drive the growth of my business.

I want readers to know that we have new endeavors coming for WildFlower Bake Shop, we are working towards expanding and sharing my talent with others. I plan to offer upcoming classes for those interested in learning the art of cookie decorating, we are working on a mobile trailer for the business and expanding our menu with some new options.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was not shy at all, I have always been able to talk to anyone stranger or not. I learned young people are some of the good things that we have in the world and that it takes nothing to be kind to someone.

Growing up, I was athletic and that’s what held my interest I was very active in track and cross country. I was also interested in art but never felt like art was beneficial for me so it was a skill I never worked on until I got older and realized how therapeutic it was.
