Today we’d like to introduce you to William “Weilyum” Chapman
Hi William, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for music and the art of storytelling. It was like through playing drums or acting in plays . . . I was able to truly have my voice heard.
My first love was and will always be playing drums but one day I had the opportunity to act in a church play as Moses. Acting in this play gave me the opportunity to be someone else but not get in trouble for it. I took my role so serious, I mean self made costumes and makeup to look old using things I found around the house. I would look forward to these plays every year.
As I got older and went to college I was introduced to the art of filmmaking. I had no idea that this was something you could go to school for. Growing up I had my favorite movies and shows but I didn’t really understand that I could actually go to school for this or study it. Starting as an accounting major strictly for hopes to make a lot of money but that wasn’t my purpose. Circumstances happened where I had to change majors; this was my blessing. I switched to TV/Film Production at University of Memphis and began to study and play catchup on the greats. I was now given the opportunity to write out my imagination and get people to see things the way I saw them. I was exposed to so much during this time of my life at University of Memphis and built a solid foundation on the art of storytelling. I had a new love!
The thing that makes being a visual storyteller so special to me is; I get to share with the world how I see things. When I meet with my clients I get them to tell me what they imagined for their project, how they visioned their special day to be and I get to take their ideas, sometimes their (I really don’t knows) and turn them into a story that reflects my interpretation of their mind. I get to create art! I get to capture memories that last a lifetime. I get to be as crazy and creative as the project allows me to be! It’s never the same and gives me so much joy!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being a business owner has not been a smooth road but it’s been a fun road. Just like any journey we travel there have been times when I’ve had no sleep due to having multiple projects needing to be completed while I work a full time job. There have been times when I felt like just letting it all go and only do passion projects. Times when I felt I couldn’t find my audience. Through it all, I keep traveling and going on this road. When I look over memories I have created over this almost 20 years and the growth in my art and opportunities I’ve had. It’s all been worth it.
