Kay Alexis shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Kay, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
What I’m most proud of building quietly is my self-awareness and emotional intelligence. I’ve learned that it’s okay to sit with my emotions, but I don’t let them dictate my moves. Even when life throws chaos or energy meant to distract or destroy, I stay rooted and aligned. I move with grace, not impulse.
Reading The Four Agreements really shifted something in me. The principles, like not taking things personally and not making assumptions reminded me how powerful it is to respond rather than react. That kind of inner work doesn’t make headlines, but it’s the foundation of everything.. how I show up, how I lead, how I create, and how I continue to move forward with intention.
I’ve also learned I don’t need to judge others when they act from a place of pain. I’ve developed the ability to hold space without judgment. People don’t always realize how deeply I read emotional tone, context, and energy. I pause assumptions and offer the clearest version of you, back to you. It’s invisible, but intentional. Just like style, it’s the quiet details that make the biggest impact.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, my name is Kayla Shaw. I’m a multifaceted creative, model, and caregiver balancing life as a nursing student while building my luxury hair brand, K’Couture Co crafted to empower women through elegance, confidence, and intention.
My path hasn’t been traditional. Currently, I’m in a reset season of nursing school, reconnecting with my purpose to heal others physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Alongside this, I’m growing Call of Beauty, specializing in high-quality wigs, ponytails, and sew-ins designed to make women feel seen and powerful. My work in the modeling world, including walking in New York Fashion Week, has opened new avenues of creativity and visibility.
I’m also working on a planner designed for both men and women, created to support intentional living and soft hustle habit, helping people organize their goals while maintaining balance and self-care.
What sets my story apart is the balance I cultivate between softness and strength, hustle and healing, ambition and alignment. I believe deeply in the power of the soft hustle: doing the inner work while quietly building something meaningful. Whether I’m in scrubs, on set, or styling behind the scenes, my mission remains the same simply to move with purpose and help other women confidently walk in theirs.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world told me who I had to be, I was simply Kayla just a little girl with big dreams, a soft heart, and an imagination that ran wild. I cared deeply for people, even when I didn’t fully understand their struggles and I found joy in creating whether it was styling hair, writing, modeling, or simply dreaming up the life I wanted. Over time, life tried to put me into box but I discovered my true strength lies in holding onto that same compassion, creativity, and curiosity I had before the labels, the deadlines and the expectations. That’s the version of me I choose to nurture, protect and live by every day.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I stopped hiding my pain when I realized it wasn’t a weakness it was proof I survived. For a long time, I carried my struggles in silence because I thought vulnerability would make me seem less capable. But I learned that sharing my story, in my own way, could be a bridge for someone else’s healing. Now, instead of letting pain define me, I use it as fuel to love deeper, to create with intention and to show others that broken pieces can still build something beautiful.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say what really matters to me is people—making sure they feel valued, supported, and seen. They’d say I care about growth, not just for myself but for the people around me, and that I’m the one they turn to for honest, thoughtful advice. They know I’m big on intention, whether it’s in relationships, my career, or my creative work, and that I have this deep need to leave people better than I found them. They’d probably also tell you I protect my peace like it’s gold and that I don’t move without purpose it has to make sense.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people remember me as someone who showed up with kindness, intention, and strength. Most importantly someone who lifted others up even when life was hard. I want my story to be about resilience and compassion, about choosing to create beauty and healing in the world, whether through my work, my relationships, or simply how I treated people day to day. More than anything, I want to be remembered as someone who made others feel valued and inspired to be their best selves—always staying true to who they are, living from within, not just performing for the outside world.
