Life & Work with Alexis Wilkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Wilkins.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up, I always wanted to be a teacher. As I got older, I became more interested in the field of medicine. Music has always been a huge part of my life but I never thought that I would pursue a career in it. Through college, I changed my major three times, all heavily focused on science.

College was a great experience but I wasn’t really seeing the bigger picture as something I wanted for my life. Life is very mysterious and unpredictable. Sometimes, you experience things that aren’t for you to find out what is. After I came to the understanding that school isn’t for me, I started to hang around with a bunch of different artists who inspired me to start writing music.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not. I would say that one of the biggest challenges has been just making the right decisions. It’s hard when you’re chasing a dream or pursuing something that the people around you wouldn’t think twice about. It definitely gets lonely. It’s hard to try to get people to see your vision but I realized that as long as I see it that’s all that matters.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an independent music artist. I specialize in rap music. I don’t think I’m known for anything yet but I feel like I will probably be known for my style. I’m most proud of the fact that I don’t let anything get in my way. When I write music I try to focus on what’s real versus entertainment.

What were you like growing up?
My mom always says that I talked a lot. I still do. I loved to read growing up and to teach. I feel like I was a fairly friendly child. I danced all of my childhood and loved computer games. I was to myself most of the time, friends always came and went.

My personality was very goofy, loved to play. It’s funny because I was never really interested in money until I got older.
