Life & Work with Angel Coleman of Southeast Memphis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Coleman.

Hi Angel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started in this field as early as I can remember, I was always in the salon with my grandmother. She was a stylist and her shop was connected to her house. I was there daily soaking up all the knowledge and skills that I could. As I found my way into adulthood and trying different jobs, I always came back to hair. So one day I decided to go back to school get my license and live the dream I’ve had since I was a little girl. I’ve been doing and loving it ever Vince!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The hair game has always been good to me but no it has not always been easy. From starting over at 27 going back to school to get my license to opening a shop with my husband and diving into the industry head first, there have been plenty ups and downs. As a shop owner you have a lot more responsibility in keeping everything going. I’m thankful to have a partner in my husband so that everything is not on me, but it’s not always rainbows and sunshine, but it is always worth it! We made it through the pandemic and bouncing back has not been the easiest, but we are thriving yet.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In my work I consider myself an artist. I refer to myself as a hair artist because that’s what I do! I create art that you live your life wearing and I’m honored. I specialize in natural hair care and locs. I am also a master colorist. I’ve been doing this professionally for 11 years and all my clients still have their edges! My clients know that I will put the health of their hair first while also giving them the latest trends and styles! What sets me apart from others is that I care. I care about the client first as a person and the health of the hair and producing quality work that they feel good about! I want you to leave with a smile and feeling 10x’s better than when they came in. That’s why I do it!

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Well it depends on what we’re talking about as it concerns to risks. If you as me to bungee jump off a building probably not, but I’ll get on a roller coaster even tho I’m afraid of those. I will travel almost anywhere and zip line and try new things! Professionally I’ll probably take any risk you through at me because I wanna see how far I can go!
