Life & Work with Ashley Benham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Benham.

Hi Ashley, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved photography but I really got to dive deeper into it in high school photographing school events and my love for it really grew. That’s when my dad saw just how much I loved capturing memories on film and so he got me my first nice camera so I could stop using the school’s camera all the time, and I never looked back after that. And he’s just as supportive of me now as he was back then.

I went on to study photography and received my BA from Columbia College Chicago. All of my professors told us to never become wedding photographers. I shrugged it off.

I moved back to Memphis and started my own wedding photography business. I was called to document human connection and love. My family and friends have been so supportive and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a business owner can be challenging at times! When Covid hit, our entire worlds were turned upside down. The wedding industry came to a complete halt.

Clients were having to make tough calls on whether to reschedule their big day, cancel it altogether, or have a small, scaled-down version with Covid-19 protocols. It was and still is, unchartered waters for us all.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a photographer who specializes in weddings, couples, and boudoir. I’m known for my bold, bright colorful photos. I capture those candids moments couples love to remember.

I’m not your average wedding photographer. I have colorful hair and tattoos that match my photos and a spunky personality.
