Life & Work with Ashley McKenzie Smith of Atlanta, Georgia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley McKenzie Smith

Hi Ashley, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey I would say is one of resilience, determination, and an unyielding fight for justice. My life took a devastating turn on December 16, 2022, when my only child, my son, Jaylin McKenzie, was killed by Memphis police during a traffic stop. In the aftermath of this tragedy, I transformed my grief into action, becoming a relentless advocate against police brutality, systemic injustices and a voice for countless families seeking justice.

Determined to keep Jaylin’s name alive, I founded Say Their Names Monuments, an initiative dedicated to honoring victims of police violence, gun violence and pedestrian fatalities through public memorials, awareness campaigns, and community activism. I organize press conferences, town halls, and national platforms, amplifying the voices of impacted families and pushing for systemic change.

Beyond advocacy, I have taken creative approaches to her advocate. I designed the Say Names tribute book and calendar, ensuring that stolen lives are never forgotten. I have also expanded my work by launching eBooks and digital classes, empowering others to navigate justice movements effectively.

Through countless interviews, public speeches, and community events, I have become a pillar of strength, resilience, and power in the fight for accountability. I try to light up any room with my love, strength and presence, leading with determination and refusing to be silenced. My journey is far from over, and as I continue to push forward, I ensure that Jaylin’s legacy and the other lives taken from systemic injustices —and the fight for justice—lives on.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For me, the road has been anything but smooth. Losing my son… my only child Jaylin McKenzie, at the hands of Memphis police on December 16, 2022, shattered my world. Navigating life after such a devastating loss has been an unimaginable challenge, but I refused to let grief consume me. Instead, I turned my pain into purpose, stepping into the fight for justice—yet this journey has not been easy.

One of the biggest struggles has been facing a system designed to protect those responsible rather than hold them accountable. From delays in obtaining evidence to encountering legal roadblocks, I have had to fight relentlessly just to get the truth about what happened to my son, Jaylin. The emotional toll of reliving my son’s death through interviews, advocacy, and public events has been overwhelming, but I continue to push forward despite the pain.

I have also faced resistance from law enforcement and systemic opposition, including intimidation tactics, dismissive officials, and the uphill battle of demanding real policy change. At the same time, balancing activism with personal healing has been a challenge—there’s no roadmap for grieving while leading a movement.

Yet, through every obstacle, I remain unshaken. I have built a powerful network of impacted families, activists, and supporters who refuse to let Jaylin’s and other lives stolen name be forgotten. My fight is far from over, but no matter how difficult the road gets, I will move forward with unwavering determination, love for my son, and a vision for justice that cannot be silenced.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work at Goodwill of North Georgia as a Data Entry Specialist, where I also handle Direct Referrals for the SNAP E&T program. My role involves a mix of customer service, data management, and outreach, ensuring that individuals have access to the resources they need to succeed.

I spend a lot of my time making calls for our career centers, following up with prospective clients to see if they’re interested in one of our training programs or other services. I also input and manage data for our career centers, keeping everything organized and running smoothly. Beyond that, I train volunteers, participants, and new staff, making sure they’re prepared to contribute effectively. I also assist with coverage, job fairs, and graduations, helping create opportunities for individuals to grow in their careers.

What sets me apart is my dedication to service and my ability to connect with people. I don’t just process data—I help individuals find real opportunities that can change their lives. Seeing someone go from uncertainty to success because of the resources I helped connect them with is what I’m most proud of. I believe in making a difference, one person at a time, and I bring that passion into everything I do.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I’m always looking for ways to grow, both personally and professionally. One of my favorite resources is Joe Dispenza—his work on the power of the mind, manifestation, and self-transformation really resonates with me. I believe in the importance of mindset, energy, and intention, and his teachings help me stay focused and motivated.
I also find a lot of value in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. It’s a great guide for personal and professional success, helping me stay organized, proactive, and intentional in my work and daily life.

Beyond that, I stay inspired by podcasts and blogs focused on personal development, success, and justice advocacy. Whether it’s learning new productivity techniques, staying informed about social issues, or simply finding motivation, I believe in constantly feeding my mind with knowledge and positive energy.
