Life & Work with Dr. Artangela Henry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Artangela Henry.

Hi Dr. Henry, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My dream of becoming a positive impact on those around me started at the tender age of five.

I was always intrigued with the functionality of the human body and had a love for science. This love of wanting a deeper understanding of how the body functions were cultivated by my mother when she purchased my first set of Encyclopedias for the Human Body. At the time, I was six years old and all I knew was I wanted to help people and become an obstetrician. As the years progressed, a career in the healthcare field felt like an unfolding dream.

During my senior year in high school, I worked as a pharmacy technician at a local chain drug store. I was persuaded to pursue a career as a pharmacist, but I knew my calling would lead me in a different direction. After receiving an Honors Diploma from Whitehaven High School, I attended The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and majored in Biology Pre-med.

I was led to the field of nursing and soon after graduation, obtained a second bachelor’s degree in nursing from The University of Tennessee Health Science Center. I satisfied my desire of being one of the first to witness life entering the world by becoming a Labor and Delivery nurse. I absolutely loved being a nurse.

My desire for healthcare development, patient education, treatment of complex disease processes, and improved patient outcomes led me to obtain a master’s in nursing with a concentration in Family Nurse Practitioner and a Doctorate in Nursing Practice with a concentration in Adult Gerontology-Acute Care, both from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

I’m now a nurse practitioner and Assistant Professor at a local university with certifications in Adult-Gerontology, Acute Care, and Family Practice. I specialize in sickle cell disease, a genetically inherited blood disorder that results in decreased oxygen in the blood and subsequent medical complications.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Throughout my journey, many challenges knocked at my subliminal door. I was a first-generation college student and graduate with what felt like, the weight of the world on my shoulders. I wanted to make my family proud and at the time, was a responsible contributor to life at home.

I’ve encountered situations of not being accepted, appreciated, or valued in the workplace. I faced times of not being supported during various transitions within my career and subsequently realized I had not been equipped with tips and tools to foster success on my path.

I had to develop self-taught strategies to guide me along the way. I had a gift to provide solutions to problems and this characteristic helped to guide me through difficult circumstances. Many of my experiences prepared me for the next phase of my journey.

During these many phases and changes in my career, I found that other healthcare professionals were experiencing some of the same obstacles I encountered. I knew then I had to change the narrative of feeling defeated for those who use their time and talent to pour into others.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I founded Crown Vision Consulting, a healthcare consultancy service, in 2021 to provide tips and tools for strategic leadership and career solutions to healthcare professionals and to provide educational expertise to the healthcare industry on various disease processes.

My aim as a healthcare strategist and consultant is to bring Impact, Support, Empowerment, and Elevation through resources, speaking engagements, and discovery calls with Q&A consultation for solutions to specific problems. I strive to ensure healthcare professionals are seen, valued, heard, and appreciated in their own right. The services I provide compel clients to become confident in their respective careers and identify their purpose and passion.

I create an atmosphere that evokes self-advocacy and an understanding of knowing your worth and walking in it, unapologetically. I’ve been sought after by several Fortune 500 companies as a consultant to educate their scientific teams on the pathophysiology and management of various disease processes.

I appreciate the support and sacrifice of my family who continuously motivates me to set new goals and create space for me to pour into others.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Ironically, during my undergraduate training and at the start of my career, I was never exposed to or encouraged to seek out a mentor. It was never a topic of discussion or a requirement in my then academic and career settings. I soon found that seeking a mentor is critical to being successful.

Mentors are needed in both personal and professional aspects of our lives, but not any mentor is qualified for the task. It’s wise to seek out those who have traveled paths you would like to travel or someone who possesses a set of skills or character traits you would like to possess. Mentors help to shape and mold you for various phases of life.

It’s important to know that mentors can help equip you with tips and tools needed to reach your goal, but they are not responsible for doing the work. You have to be dedicated to formulating a plan that works for you to reach your desired set of goals.

I’ve found that being engaged in the needs of the community is an important aspect of growth and developing networking skills. I made the intentional decision to join organizations that compel me in my purpose to help the communities I serve; I always encourage others to do the same.
