Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Harris
Hi Emily, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I knew I always wanted to be in a creative roll when it came to my carrier. I started out a studio art major when I entered college and then sophomore year ended up not only switching to visual arts but then adding another major and minor to my degree. I ended up graduating with a double major in Visual Arts and Creative Mass Media with a double minor in Advertising and Italian Studies! When I became the public relations chair women for my sorority Sophomore year, I really enjoyed running the social media account, tik-tok, and website. I also liked how my position was in charge of planning tabling events at our University in order to help promote the Phi Mu brand on campus and in a positive light. I then began to become more involved in social media, branding, and marketing over the next few years that followed. I ran the study abroad social media account for my University and was an ambassador for students. I most recently did a social media marketing internship and was a University of Memphis Influencer for the marketing and communications department as the University of Memphis. I helped create social media campaigns and created fun and interactive videos. I now am currently interning in Italy for a travel company called Bus2alps! I work in sales, marketing, and tourism. I have learned a tremendous amount from all the rolls and experiences I have had over the past few years and up to now. I am excited to see where I go next when I return to Memphis in April.
Not only with my professional carrier, I was granted many opportunities through University of Memphis that impacted me greatly and lead me to where I am today. Junior year, I studied fort a semester abroad in Florence, Italy. I attended Florence University of the Arts and my experience was beyond amazing! I learned a lot about myself, a new language, culture, and met so many wonderful people along the way. I participated in a club called, Italian Family Club, through the university. With this, I would meet with a local Italian family once a week and have dinner with them. I got to learn about their way of life, see what it was like to live as a local and hear their amazing stories. I am forever grateful for that experience I had and I still am in contact with my Italian family today. Now every time I am in Florence, I get to see them! I took Italian while I was abroad and fell in love with the language. I ended up switching my language to Italian when I returned home and also added an Italian Studies minor to my degree.
Just this past summer I had the privilege to return to Florence and take a three-week class with FUA in Entrepreneurial Marketing. We got to speak with and tour local brands/companies in Florence as well which was very interesting and fun! Then, when my course was over I worked for the University for the remainder of the summer as a Resident Assistant for their high school program! I was in charge of planning their schedule, weekend activities, and much more.
Overall my experiences have brought me to love traveling, meeting new people, experiencing other cultures, and continuing my passion in the arts through a variety of mediums and outlets.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Sometimes I did struggle with learning what would be the best way to market a certain brand through social media, or figuring out what I should implement into the marketing and advertising to best suit my target audience but I have learned so much along the way and have enjoyed the experiences!
When it came to living abroad for a long period I did face challenges of homesickness sometimes but I now have Italian friends who live in the city along with Florentines who know my name and I know theirs! It is people like these that has made Florence feel like a second home to me, and I am so thankful.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I do a variety of work. I paint, draw, and do photography. But I also do work in visual/digital media like graphics, videography, multi media, copy-write, and more. Since I was little, I have had a passion for the arts and creating and I have always been a creative person! I love the arts and I love having creative freedom when it comes to my personal work or work for a company/brand. The ideas are endless!
You can find some of my work on my website which I linked down below in the URL section!
How do you think about happiness?
Meeting new people, experiencing new places, spending time with friends and family, and creating art are all things that make me happy. I love meeting new people, discovering new places, and learning about peoples stories and cultures. I enjoy spending quality time with my friends and family. When it comes to creating, being able to create something of my own brings be so much joy. I love thinking outside the box and making work of my own.
