Today we’d like to introduce you to Jhoselyn Avaria
Hi Jhoselyn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started in 2018 painting clothes by hand, at that time I used it as a means of connection with the world of costume design and art in general which are careers that always interested me but for monetary issues I could not access them.
Little by little I began to learn and integrate new textile techniques in my garments, I learned about prints, sublimate garments, the world of patchwork, embroidery, until I started to make clothes focused on upcycling.
During the year 2023, when the trend of wide pants became stronger and all the skinny pants started to be left aside, I started to look for options to give a second life to all these garments that people were literally throwing away, that’s how I started to make the first skirts and rescue all the skinny jeans that were already out of trend.
With a slightly more grunge and punk version, I tried to make my own version of the typical pleated jeans skirts and today they have become one of the stars of my brand.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The first problem that comes to mind is the pandemic, besides the fact that people did not have the economy to buy as much as before, I remember that trying to make new garments was already complicated, either by the suppliers of the implements, how difficult it was to manage deliveries and shipments of products, life in general, we all went through it and we know how difficult it was.
On the other hand, I feel that a recurring problem is how much is demanded from small businesses against how badly they want to pay. I think that one of the most repetitive problems is that we are constantly compared to fast fashion, when we have completely different ideals, different materials and processes, there is no point of comparison between a garment that was created massively, There is no comparison between a garment that is massively created, that will be very cheap thanks to the materials of dubious quality in addition to the overexploitation of workers against a handmade garment, that although it is not made from scratch, it is a longer process to rescue and give useful life to a garment that thanks to upcycling has a unique design that we will not repeat, it is literally an exclusive garment that no one else will have.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Currently I’m a fashion designer, thanks to this small venture that I started to keep me close to the textile world I was able to generate money to study it and continue working on it: and that’s something I am very proud and happy about, that I had already resigned myself to not being able to study it, because it is a very demanding career economically, besides that it does not have much field of work in chile, however, something in me went ahead and without even planning I create this space of art and upcycling, That allowed me to be a designer.
The most entertaining part of my job is to create, freely with textiles on the table, without prior design (but with a study matching trends and preferences of my target audience) and just let the mind flow, I think that’s something people usually remember about me, of my designs on the internet, free from creative processes and as document so that they can be part of them through social networks. To be completely honest, I would not know how to tell you that I differ from the rest, but something must be, because even in difficult times, the love of people always comes to me, my work, my creations, something must be, but I still know myself.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I like that it is a small town, quiet, a slow pace of life, however, this same can sometimes be a little counterproductive when it comes to having a business.
