Life & Work with Jojo Smith of North Little Rock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jojo Smith.

Hi Jojo, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well, I have always been a person that has been big on education, even if that something that could be pertaining to street knowledge as well. All I’ve ever known is that knowledge is power. Being a up-and-coming journalist and what led me to this destination is my love and passion for storytelling. I’ve always been able to document things mentally and always seem to remember experiences I’ve had through music and certain scents and just the way things make you feel the nostalgia. Being a black trans woman in America and trying to find your footing can be difficult but what I’ve learned is it’s all about the people you’ve met along the way and that you continue to meet. These experiences give you lifetime lessons. And as time progresses as do we and it’s very important to be aware of growth. I have been through so many ups and downs regarding how society decides or tries to go about treating me. And what I’ve learned is that us says individuals have more power than we think if we allow ourselves to know that we control our own narrative to our own story. In this lifetime, it’s our own personal movie and it’s important to be able to press play rewind and pause for a minute to soak in the beautiful moments that you will never forget. I was born in California. I’ve also lived in Texas, Oklahoma. I have visited Nashville Tennessee a couple of times but I’m just now stepping out into this world and following my dreams and aspirations of journalism and becoming a very well-known journalist.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No it definitely has not been a smooth road, but I think if it would have been, I would be bored. The challenges and the obstacles that come our way, make it exciting and make it interesting. Some of the struggles I’ve had I think is what made me realize that I was an excellent journalist. When you’re constantly being antagonize and people are trying to provoke an argument out of you you start to think about how to respond in a different matter. And for me personally I love to watch people dig their own graves. So you talk about somebody that is quick to pull out the phone and record. I’m yo girl. lol. I’ve learned that it’s not always good to respond in every situation that may arise or come your way. Sometimes you can even walk into another situation that’s going on that has nothing to do with you and it’s OK to just walk away sometimes. There’s no need to feel that you have to prove yourself to anyone. People compare themselves to what they feel they are good at. So for example, there might be a woman that basis her worth off of how good her hair looks compared to other women’s hair. So with that being said, you can’t always take what other people say personally. And I’ve also learned that people do what they do because they want to. So it’s important while you’re in a situation of hardship or looking for guidance to have people around you that support you and to know to waste no time on people that simply don’t. We don’t have that much time here. Too many distractions will have you looking in the mirror saying what did I do with my life. And I never wanna be one of those people. So I just try to keep it moving that clock don’t stop so neither can our baby.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Well, I do sing and write music as well but mostly I’m a Journalist. In my personal opinion and view and perspective of how journalism relates to art is simply the visuals and the narrative that is being documented that can affect emotional feelings from people that learn more about what they never knew about. I’m a great people person. I can get along with just about anybody walking in the room and let that conversation flow. And I think that is one of my special superpowers that I possess. Also, I’m very understanding and empathetic towards Others. I’m always trying to figure out the details and find the deeper truth of whatever the topic of the discussion is. But I always try to respect people‘s boundaries and keep in mind that some things might be too traumatic for people to share. Including myself. So I fully understand

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think being humble, and if somebody is gracious enough to you to walk up to you and give you a compliment, appreciate them and look at them in their eyes with sincerity when you communicate with them. Because you never know what you can say or how you can make people feel just based off of your energy, let alone the language you decide to use with them. And just be thankful for life.
