Life & Work with Keisha Gilliam of Citywide

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keisha Gilliam.

Hi Keisha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
BabyKakes began in 2019 as a simple idea to raise funds for my former church. We decided to host a bake sale, offering cupcakes and candy apples. At the time, I had never baked a cake in my life, so it took plenty of research just to come up with a simple cupcake recipe. While those first cupcakes looked far from perfect, the taste was amazing. To my surprise, we sold out that day, and many of the people who purchased asked me to bake for them again. Some of those same supporters are still with me today.

When I took a leap of faith and decided to turn baking into a business, the world had just come to a standstill with the onset of COVID-19. That unexpected pause gave me the opportunity to read, research, and take classes from bakers across social media. BabyKakes started with small, individually wrapped treats like cupcakes, cookies, and cake jars, but over time we expanded to include sheet cakes and other favorites.

Baking has always been in my family’s DNA. Growing up, desserts were the highlight of every holiday gathering, lovingly prepared by my grandmothers. It’s no surprise that I followed in their footsteps, carrying on that tradition of putting love into every dessert. For me, BabyKakes is about more than baking; it’s about creating treats that bring people together, spreading the same joy and love I experienced as a child.

At BabyKakes, our mission is simple: to make every bite a sweet reminder that “Everybody Luvs A Lil Cake or A Cookie!”

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. I started with no baking or business experience, and then launched right as COVID-19 hit. There were moments of doubt, mistakes, and plenty of trial and error. But those struggles pushed me to grow, get creative, and lean on my faith. Every challenge became a stepping stone that shaped BabyKakes into what it is today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the Owner and Creator of BabyKakes, where I specialize in homemade desserts that bring people together. While I’m known for my cupcakes and cookies, what I’m most proud of is how far BabyKakes has come from a simple church fundraiser to a business that serves families, organizations, and community events. What sets me apart is not just the product, but the heart behind it. I combine the professionalism of my corporate background with the creativity and love that goes into every treat.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
People can support BabyKakes by ordering our treats for their events, holidays, or simply when they want something sweet. I also love collaborating with organizations, small businesses, and community events to create custom desserts that make occasions even more special. Beyond purchasing, spreading the word, sharing our story, and recommending us to others means so much. Every order and every referral helps us continue to grow and keep doing what we love, spreading joy one cake and cookie at a time.
