Life & Work with Khilan Brooks of Memphis, TN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Khilan Brooks

Khilan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started as a photographer in high school using an iPhone to take photos of other students. I got a lot of positive feedback on the photos I’ve taken- being told that I had an “eye” for taking pictures, but I never thought much of it.

After I graduated high school in 2017, I attended Southwest Community College where I met other people who were into photography and they helped me along the way. Eventually, in 2018, I was able to invest in my first camera.

From then on, I have been exploring the city, meeting new people, gaining clientele, and finding my style within the medium that is photography.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I faced imposter syndrome in my early years of photography due to being exposed to other photographers on social media.

This dilemma made it hard for me to express myself, and I felt discouraged from sharing my work.

This mindset eventually went away with time as I learned to accept myself and realized that I was worthy of bringing my ideas to fruition.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a photographer, I’ve taken photos of many things, but I mostly enjoy portraits of individuals and candids.

I enjoy portraits because it gives me the opportunity to connect with people whether that’s one-on-one or within a group environment.

I believe the greatest accomplishment I’ve had is simply being able to work with people because it allows me to grow within myself and as a photographer.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memories consist of sketching and drawing cartoon characters or creating my own characters.
