Life & Work with LaTarius Sawyer of Memphis

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaTarius Sawyer.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started out in South Memphis with a passion for music and storytelling at a young age. By 12, I was already creating music and developing my sound, inspired by artists like Three 6 Mafia and Young Dolph. Over the years, I’ve grown into an independent artist, producer, filmmaker, and entrepreneur under the name L. Sawyer, building my brand through music projects, film work with Sawyer Philmz, and community-driven ideas through Sound Proof Presentz. My journey has been about turning creativity into opportunity, staying authentic to my roots, and continuing to evolve with every project I create.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Coming from South Memphis, there were a lot of challenges that could’ve easily become distractions or setbacks. One of the biggest struggles was building everything independently without major industry backing, so I had to learn a lot on my own — from music production and engineering to branding, filming, and business. There were also moments of doubt, financial pressure, and people not always believing in the vision early on. But those struggles helped shape me into someone who stays consistent, adapts, and keeps creating no matter the circumstances. Every obstacle became motivation to work harder and build something bigger for myself and my community.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work as an independent artist, creative producer, and entrepreneur. My focus is music, storytelling, and building a full creative brand around my work instead of just dropping songs. I record and develop my sound as an artist (L. Sawyer), but I also handle a lot of the behind-the-scenes work like production ideas, visual direction, and project development through my company Sound Proof Presentz and film work under Sawyer Philmz.

I’m known for being versatile and authentic — I don’t box myself into one style or lane. My sound pulls from Southern hip-hop roots but blends in melody, emotion, and storytelling that can connect in different spaces. I’ve collaborated and built relationships in music over the years, and I’ve stayed consistent from a young age, growing my craft since I was 12.

What I’m most proud of is not just the music, but building everything from the ground up independently — creating my own lane, my own brand, and continuing to evolve without waiting for outside validation. What sets me apart is that I treat this like a full creative business and lifestyle, not just a hobby or a moment. Every project I drop is part of a bigger vision I’m building for longevity.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck has played a role in my life, but I don’t lean on it as the main reason for anything I’ve built. I’ve had moments that felt like good timing or the right door opening at the right time, but I’ve also had setbacks where things didn’t go as planned. What I’ve learned is that both sides pushed me to stay resourceful and keep building instead of waiting on perfect conditions.

Most of my progress has come from staying active across different areas—music, writing books, running a cleaning service, and managing rental properties. Each one came with its own learning curve. The books forced me to organize my thoughts and turn experience into something lasting. The cleaning service taught consistency and customer accountability. Rental properties taught patience, responsibility, and long-term thinking. And music has been the creative outlet that ties everything together.

So I wouldn’t say my path has been luck-driven. It’s been more about preparation meeting opportunity, and even when luck showed up in small ways, I had already been working enough to be ready for it.
