Today we’d like to introduce you to Marina Cole
Hi Marina , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
For me, photography had always been in the background- taking candid photos of friends or the world around me when I travel. It wasn’t until two years ago that I began navigating photography as a career.
Starting off with taking graduation photos/headshots, I loved being able to capture people in their happiest moments for them to cherish. Transitioning to concert photography has been the most exciting part of my career so far. Forming relationships with the bands I shoot for and being able to document their journey has been incredibly rewarding, there’s truly nothing like it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While there are always challenges with starting a new venture, fortunately I’ve been incredibly lucky. Establishing connections with the bands I currently or have previously worked with has allowed me to create a wonderfully supportive network of people that are incredibly helpful.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in concert/portrait photography. I would have to say that I am most proud of the relationships I’ve been able to make that allow me to express myself creatively, whether it’s from shooting onstage to collaborating on photo shoots. Taking the time to make connections with each person I shoot for is crucial, if they’re not completely comfortable the photos will reflect that.
I think my ability to shoot people as they see themselves is what sets me apart from others. Most of the feedback that I get from shoots is that I was able to capture the way they felt onstage in that moment or that I made them feel comfortable in front of the camera for the first time.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
That’s a difficult question, with photography it’s truly hard to say. With access to high quality cameras in any capacity (phones, point and shoot, etc), truly anyone can take a great photo. That in and of itself creates a really competitive market, making it crucial to generate a style that makes you unique.
Over the next 5-10 years, I see the photography industry becoming more niche; creating communities of people that have specific styles of photos that they lean towards.
