Today we’d like to introduce you to Sauce Papi.
Hi Sauce, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I got my start with music around 8 years old. My older brother, who also makes music, used to produce beats on the family computer and whenever he finished using it, I would then start to play around with the program and make beats.
Fast forward to around middle school when I received my first cell phone, I used to rap little verses on my answering machine, as well as write some for my friends and their answering machines. Shortly after, I received an mp3 player with a microphone attached.
I used to sit beside a TV with the theme music playing in the background from different Nintendo games and rap to the beats while recording with the mp3 player until I had a full song. My style then still was very much influenced by my older brother.
During high school, I recorded at friends’ and family members’ homes until I eventually bought my first microphone. At that time, I was very heavily into Tyler, The Creator, and Childish Gambino who ultimately shaped my entire outlook on music and life in general.
As I watched their craft, I adapted the ability to have a hand in every part of my creative process, whether that be producing my own beats, recording myself, shooting my own photos/videos, designing my cover arts, wearing my own brand clothing, literally everything. Fast forward 63 Music Videos and 16 Projects later, I’ve still kept that mindset.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
By no means has this been a smooth journey.
I’ve experienced more lows than highs definitely and have contemplated giving up countless times, but when it’s in you, you’ll never allow yourself to. Finances, that being funding my career while at the same time paying bills, has been the largest struggle.
I’ve been jobless, moved to different cities, and have turned down promising jobs all in attempts to give 100% of myself to the thing I was most passionate about, the thing I believe can change my life and the lives of those around me, music.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I pride myself on being a very lyrical artist, but what I’m most proud of is my ability to step completely out of the norm and push myself to try different genres or sometimes blend genres.
Most know me for my ability to do literally everything myself. I’ve never really had a solid “team” but I’ve never let that hinder my ability to create and release. So far, that mindset has gotten me album placements from artists like B Slade (formerly known as Tonex), interviews from names like BrinkTV, features from artists like Crunchy Black from 3 6 Mafia, and even in the same room as Mike Will Made-It.
I’ve always stood out from my peers in the industry because my sound was more of a universal sound rather than a local sound. I never sounded like I was from Memphis. In fact, my sound doesn’t have a location one could name when listening.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
If luck was on my side, I’d be so much further in my music career ha! Everything that I’ve accomplished thus far has been out of pure hard work, hours of just studying and figuring things out. I owe nothing to luck but I still pray that it comes my way.
