Life & Work with Shawn Van Briesen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Van Briesen.

Hi Shawn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I began wanting to draw comic books. I had just started doing that when I took a summer job as an ink and paint the person in a commercial animation house. I was very fast at this (and the animators) noticed and decided I should be trained as an animator. I worked in animation for several years. Eventually, I ended up in eLearning as it combined all my skills, illustration, animation, GUI design, and media/content creation. Now I mainly do commercial storyboards in Los Angeles and I’m in the process of creating new art and stories. I’m also working on an NFT project.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve predominately been a freelancer. That is always feast or famine. Currently, it’s a ‘feast’ but I’m aware that I’ve been very lucky in that I always seem to find new work.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Currently, I specialize in digital media creation. My roots are in traditional art and animation but the digital realm has been extremely lucrative for me and the tools are amazing. I still do traditional work but mainly as private commissions. The majority of my professional work is now digital. The work I’m most proud of is my Old Hollywood glamour pieces.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I honestly don’t believe in luck. I believe everything happens the way it is supposed to. From an early age, I put myself out there (even when I wasn’t very good). I would say perseverance has played a bigger role than luck.
