Today we’d like to introduce you to Alare Batts and Raven Davis.
Hi Alare and Raven, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
It all started in 2019 when my husband Alare and I moved back to Memphis, TN. We’re both originally from Memphis but were residing in Los Angeles, California for seven years prior to relocating. Being vegan for some years and coming back home made us realize that Memphis didn’t have many healthy options to choose from.
I mean let’s face it, Memphis is known for its tasty bbq, wings, and soul food. So we decided to bring healthy foods and detoxes to Memphis. We founded Qodesh Vegan and began to serve fresh fruit cups and bowls in our neighborhood. To our surprise, some of our customers never even had a mango before they tried Qodesh Vegan and we were excited to be serving something new, tasty, and healthy.
Our fruit stand did so well that we started to introduce some of our favorite vegan dishes such as our vegan fish made of eggplant. Since then, we have done catering events, pop-up shops, and more. In November of 2021, we had our food trailer stolen from us and that loss really did a number on our business and self-esteem in the business. We were so discouraged that we stop our operations and focused on other endeavors.
It seemed like the right thing to do until one day we gave our neighbor a mango flower that we make and she loved it.
She explained how she never eats fruit but wanted to start somewhere, it was at that moment we realized that the people needed us and that our goal to enlighten the community on healthy eating has to continue.
We haven’t gotten a call from the police yet saying our trailer was found but we’re now back out serving the communities because it has to be done especially in the poverty-stricken areas. So as of now, we’re serving in some local gyms at pop-up shops and catering until we see what’s next to come!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all.
Our first struggle was finding a business or lot that would allow us to sell our fruit and food at their location. Another struggle we had was getting our food trailer stolen from us in 2021 which was traumatizing
We’ve been impressed with Qodesh Vegan LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Qodesh Vegan sells homemade plant-based food!
All of our food is made with natural ingredients we don’t purchase any frozen or processed vegan products that are what set us apart from other vegan restaurants.
We specialize in our fresh fruit cups, bowls, and our famous vegan fish and wings. We’re most proud of our brand because we set our intentions on educating local communities on how to eat clean vegan foods.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
So growing up, I (Raven) was a very active girl, full of love, laughter and always wanting to make friends. And I (Alare) has always been circumspect, orderly and attentive, we both make up some of the attributes of our business. But if it wasn’t from the inspiration of our daughter; Qodesh name we wouldn’t be here! So we always give thanks to our child like nature.
