Meet Alisa Free of Collierville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisa Free.

Hi Alisa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in the flat lands of the Mississippi Delta and my hometown is filled with creative people that influenced me as a young girl. One of my fondest childhood memories is of illustrating the homemade stapled books that my friend wrote, while atop an elevated “fort” that my Daddy built for me. At the exact moment that Apple computers entered the graphic design world, I received my BFA in graphic design from Delta State University. My education at DSU was broad – studying art history, drawing, watercolor, printmaking, pottery and photography while learning the skills of creating graphic design pieces without a computer. For much of my career I pursued graphic design, marketing, event planning. I even restored two historic homes. The training I received at DSU and in my work prepared me with the skills I needed when I started to paint.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My path as an artist began with a struggle. I was in a long-time job that was no longer fulfilling. For a much-needed break, I took a solo vacation to a collage workshop in New Mexico. I eventually found a new job, but that began my creative/making journey that continues now. The artistic path is twisty. I’m constantly learning more about myself and the process. I think that’s what makes art a lifelong passion – the never-ending study and experimentation.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Contradictions drive my work. When I am painting, it’s as if I’m coaxing a delicate garden struggling to bloom within a sea of weeds. I often maneuver through days that are beyond my control – in life and in art. These experiences are too interlaced to be disconnected. My personal path to rest and order comes through the spontaneous process of painting. Using unconventional tools, handmade collage elements and layering, each of my expressive abstract works give life to a story, emotion or memory.

Any big plans?
I’ll be exhibiting at Germantown Performing Arts Center with two friends in Spring 2026. For our show, Drawn Together, I’ll highlight my renewed passion for collage, using inspiration drawn from the raw natural elements experienced during an extended trip through the Western US.
