Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Ling.
Hi Amanda, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I wanted to serve others in the healthcare field for as long as I can remember. Physical therapy is where I found my calling and I graduated with my doctorate from Shenandoah University in 2005. This is also where I met my husband and we set out together to make an impact on our community.
I started my career working inpatient at hospitals and rehabilitation facilities. When we moved to Tennessee in 2007, I did home health care workers and saw so many patients struggling at a surprisingly young age with complications from diabetes, strokes, cardiovascular disease, joint degeneration, and chronic pain. I could help them regain some independence and quality of life, but I felt what I had to offer was in some ways “too little, too late.”
Meanwhile, my husband pursued his passion for orthopedics and sports medicine in outpatient clinics. I saw his clients beginning to struggling with mild symptoms that I knew were leading them down a road to be one of my patients in the future. We realized that intervening with our clients at age 35 to 65 is where we were going to make the biggest impact on their long-term health. We wanted to help them thrive through their lifespan, not just survive.
The medical community may help add years to your life, but as physical therapists, we add life to your years!
We opened our private practice Peak Potential Physiotherapy & Wellness in Collierville, a suburb of Memphis, in 2015 with this mission. Our team empowers our community to transform their lives, stay independent, and be active without medications, injections, or surgery. This requires an integrative approach to recovery from illness and injury that is often missed in traditional physical therapy practices.
I became a certified nutrition specialist and added health coaching to our practice in order to fill in the missing pieces of the puzzle for our clients on their health journey. It isn’t enough to just overcome an episode of back pain. We empower our clients to keep that back pain from returning and how to live their best lives – through optimal movement, nutrition, sleep, and mindset.
Each of our clients is a whole person – not just a knee or shoulder injury – and requires a personalized whole-body approach to achieve their goals and live their most vibrant life. We have recently incorporated Fitness and Nutrition DNA testing in order to take the way we personalize exercise, food choices, recovery plans, and supplement recommendations to the next level.
Our message – don’t rob yourself of your best life! Recovering from an illness isn’t just about stopping the pain and getting older isn’t an inevitable decline. Ture wellness – the kind that gives you lasting energy, strength, and vitality is about healing the mind and the body, optimizing health, and making choices that will allow you to thrive as you age. We teach these fundamental concepts in our book “Health, Optimize, Thrive: An Integrative System to Recover Strength, Gain Energy, and Age with Vitality Even After Injury.”
We are so proud that our team carries out this mission every day at Peak Potential. They develop personalized, hands-on treatment plans, as well as deep relationships with their clients. With the addition of telehealth physical therapy and virtual health coaching services, our impact can be even greater.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Business building is never a smooth road, especially when trying to break out of the mold. As an industry, healthcare is really a sick care model. We want to truly provide health and care. This means pushing people toward wellness instead of just pulling them out of sickness. Along the way, we have met other medical providers, insurance companies, and even clients who give us quite a bit of resistance.
The pandemic of 2020 and beyond was a difficult time for all small businesses. There was fear and doubt and concern about the what if’s. As business owners, our top priority was to serve our team. We made many mistakes as we tried to navigate the unknown, but no one was laid off and no one missed a paycheck. By providing stability for our team, we believe we empower them to better serve our clients. Ideally, this is in person, but a pivot to telehealth was necessary at times and turned out to be more effective than we ever imagined.
When struggles come, we go back to our purpose and passion. When we focus on those, the profit will eventually follow.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My husband Trevor and I own Peak Potential Physiotherapy & Wellness in Collierville, Tennessee. Our team has specialty certifications in athletic training, orthopedics, manual therapy, astym, dry needling, nutrition, personal training, and more. All the tools in our toolbox allow us to address the needs of the whole person, not just carry out a generic protocol for back pain or ankle injury.
As a team, our passion and desire for helping others achieve relief from pain and return to their peak potential has made us leaders in the region and repeatedly sought after by our clients.
Personally, I am most passionate about our individualized wellness programs. Privacy protected genetic testing allows us to work with your body instead of against it – how your body builds muscle and burns fat, what recovery strategies does your body respond best to, how your body uses certain foods for energy, what nutritional gaps need to be filled in to feel your best. Best of all, this type of testing and coaching can be done in the comfort of your own home or office.
Over the years, we have learned that one size does not fit all, so each client has a personalized plan – even owners manual through their DNA – to meet their goals.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I remember volunteering as a candy striper at my local hospital where I grew up in Maryland. I transported patients all over the building, but when I found myself in the physical therapy department I knew that was where I belonged. I had the opportunity to walk alongside people on what was sometimes a very challenging journey – from babies in the NICU to the elderly. It was a blessing and set the trajectory for the rest of my life.
