Today we’d like to introduce you to Anya Wallace.
Hi Anya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello everyone, I am Anya Wallace; I go by she/her pronouns. I am a St. Louis, Missouri native. After graduating high school, I departed from my family to join the world’s finest Navy. I say that last part jokily with a great deal of seriousness. The Navy was an incredible branch to serve. I gained many life experiences and lessons during my six years of service. It is like what the wise ones say life will whip you into shape. One of the most important lessons I was introduced to was me—this period of my life began my journey of self-discovery. I used the term journey because we as humans constantly endure an evolution of change.
I am a University of Memphis student majoring in Sociology with a minor in Supply Chain Management. I have a passion for giving and service. So, recently I joined the Memphis Urban League Young Professionals. An organization within the city that equips young professionals with the tools necessary to become agents of change and empowerment in the communities of Memphis.
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with loved ones, being outdoors, and writing short stories and poetry.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Previously, I mentioned my path of self-discovery, which brought with it challenges to face. One of my biggest challenges, which I continue to work on daily, is the mindset. The inner dialogue you have with yourself is so meaningful. Our words can either bring value or destruction into our lives. In life, importance does not lie in the destination but in how the person endured the journey. The process is what transforms us into the individuals we are today.
When the pressure of life becomes overwhelming, I love to spend time near bodies of water such as the ocean, along riverbanks, and lakes. The peace and movement of the water allow me to reconcile my thoughts. It is a form of therapy. I am a supporter of mental awareness, especially within the black community. So, if you feel you may need guidance in healing, speaking with a therapist does not invalidate your character.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I balance many roles of being a veteran, a college student, an entrepreneur in Transportation and Real Estate, and a Truck driver. I started Optimal Space Transports as a dispatch service company with more on the horizon. The sky is the limit. I have spent time worrying about what others may think of me for making career shifts. As you all may know, society has conditioned us to believe we must choose one career and stick with it until retirement. However, life and especially with careers, are not linear. If you have a passion for something, I say go for it! There is no shame in adding new skills to your professional toolbox. I will say entrepreneurship does not always yield immediate success. There will be times when you are planting seeds (putting in the work), and you will not see a harvest. Now feelings of discouragement may overtake you but continue to strive because when you least expect it, breakthroughs of sprouts and plentiful crops will come!
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I will say that family gatherings and great food surround my favorite childhood memories. My family consists of great cooks, and I enjoyed playing with my cousins. So, moments of pleasant aromas filling the air, laughter overtaking my ears, and love and warmth soothing my soul have left a lasting impression on my heart.
