Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashunti Garner.
Hi Ashunti, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
So my journey first started probably in 2010 I was in the big Brother big sister program and my sister introduced me to Makeup chemistry. There is a place in Chattanooga where you could get your makeup made right in front of you. They would put all the ingredients together and you would sit and watch something like an ice cream shop, but for Makeup and I was immediately intrigued and I got on YouTube and we’re just watching Makeup for days at a time. That’s pretty much all I did even though my mom wouldn’t let me wear makeup I was always intrigued then when I got to high school and I got a job, I was able to buy my own products and I started experimenting at home and I started doing some of the girls makeup in the bathroom at school. I never actually thought I would be doing Makeup as a job Makeup has always been something just fun and expressive for me. I feel like I got to where I am today because I genuinely love Makeup and it brings a joy to my heart just to be able to transform myself into another character because I love doing sfx and fantasy makeup on myself to transforming my everyday clients and enhancing their beauty that’s already there. I love putting a smile on peoples faces and I think that’s what kept me going all these years. Also the people around me see that I am talented and they believe in me and they’ve also pushed me to be the best I can be in a part of me. I’ve always stayed with Makeup out of fear of letting them down because they know how talented I am and I just wanna live up to other people’s expectations along with my own.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I feel like Makeup itself has been a smooth road because my love for Makeup hasn’t changed, but including being an entrepreneur and doing Makeup and becoming a business owner definitely has always had its challenges from being motivated to do it every day because it’s completely different when you’re doing makeup or something as a job versus you doing something for fun. I’ve struggled with comparison. I’ve struggled with consistency. I’ve struggled with building my clientele, considering I’ve started over in different cities before, but I feel like once you really love something. It’s all worth it. It’s worth those late nights those early mornings those times where you’re crying and you feel like you don’t know why you’re doing this when you could just go get a job. But the people around me play a huge part in my life so for me as long as the people who believe in me, continue to uplift me I feel like I should be able to do that for myself when I feel like I can’t keep going I look at the people around me who have so much faith in me that I can’t not have faith in myself.

what do you know about Ashanti slays is that you can come to me and you can get any and everything because I am not just a Makeup Artist. I am a business owner business coach add Makeup instructor with over 200 students. I am most known for helping other MUA’s and also my SFX work. For me there isn’t one thing that I’m most proud of. I’m proud of it all. I’m proud of being featured in magazines, winning competitions, doing celebrities, and currently I am a haunted house makeup artist, which is one of my childhood dreams so there isn’t one thing I’m proud of it’s an umbrella of things that I didn’t think I could accomplish that I have.
