Meet B Mallery of Rose Quartz Body Adornment

Today we’d like to introduce you to B Mallery.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My wife & I started Rose Quartz Body Adornment shorter after COVID-19 restrictions were slowly being lifted. I had worked at a few of the other studios around the area and had a good understanding of what Memphis was missing in the body art industry; also the idea of not working for someone else after having so many months of social distancing was enticing.
We originally started as a piercing exclusive studio with a vintage store in the back over on Peabody & Clevland. Our goal was to build a comfortable space for everybody from 4-94 years old where they could be pierced with the best hypoallergenic & fine jewelry available. People really liked the idea of getting pierced in a space separated from the usual tattoo shop vibe which was a largely male dominated space for a long time with piercing seen as the side income for studios. After getting established, we were soon able to start hosting art showcases, house concerts, small business pop ups, and other fun events. The vintage store ‘Cherry Cosmos’ sold fun vintage jewelry and size inclusive clothes anywhere from the 1920’s to the early 2000’s.
Rose Quartz is a business built on love, and we feel like we show that through all of our chapters, but especially in this first era of the studio.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Operating any small business has its ups & downs, but the ups definitely make the journey worth it. Our first location was on the second floor of what appeared to be a house, and the door was on the back of the building & up a dark flight of stairs. It definitely took some time to get people to trust that the business wasn’t sketchy. We moved after 3 years in what we called the ‘Barbie House’ to a wonderful storefront on Clevland & Watkins, just a mile away from our original space. Moving can be hard on any business because of the time it takes people to realize we have actually just moved locations and not closed. On the opposite side of this though, people that frequent the new location’s neighborhood see the studio as a new business entirely. It’s nice to have so many people that had never even heard of us before come in to Rose Quartz and check out the space.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Coming on our fifth year in business, Rose Quartz has become known for being a safe & peaceful place to get any sort of body art done. We specialize in piercing with fine jewelry, as well as being the go to place to get your kids’ ears pierced. All of our tattooers & piercers have their own specific specialties too: the tattooers’ work ranges from blackout work to anime themed, and the piercers’ specialties range from piercing 4 year old’s lobes all the way to play piercing & surface work.
Our business is proud to be a community & neighborhood staple. We do our best to promote all of the surrounding local artists & other small businesses. Also, we also regularly do community benefit events & projects such as fundraisers for folks in need or making bags full of hygiene & personal supplies for the unhoused community in Memphis. I like to think of Rose Quartz as being the closest thing to a non-profit that a personal-service business can be.
