Today we’d like to introduce you to Bob And Liz Wilder And Wilder Lemley.
Hi Bob and Liz, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The Larry Hatchett Fishing Foundation (LHFF) is a non-profit organization that takes foster home children deep sea fishing in the Gulf of Mexico each year. The foundation was founded 36 years ago in memory of its namesake, Larry Hatchett. Larry not only loved to fish, but he also loved to teach others, especially children, to fish as well.
The LHFF attempts to lessen the unpleasant past experiences in these children’s lives by offering a weekend of fun and fellowship. We aim to give those individuals hope for a better life by demonstrating that there are people in the world that care about them and their welfare, and that there are others that have lived similar life experiences to their own.
Each year this weekend includes a 2 night stay in a condo, a beachside welcome dinner, a 6 hour deep sea fishing trip with meals and snacks provided, and a closing dinner and awards ceremony on Saturday night where all participants dine on their catch from the day. Depending on funding, the participants also receive a t-shirt, fishing rod, educational posters about the fish they caught, and/or a trophy as a way to bring part of their experience home with them. All of the aforementioned expenses are paid by generous donations to our foundation received throughout the year.
We provide between 100-120 kids the opportunity not only to learn how to fish, but also to form meaningful relationships with others in similar situations as their own. They also have the chance to learn about marine habitats and environmental awareness. Our ultimate mission is to positively impact the lives of as many children in the foster care system as possible, and we hope to one day take 1,000+ foster home children on the trip. All oof our time and funding is allocated to this annual event.
The 2026 trip will be Friday, October 16th through Sunday, October 18th in Destin, FL and we are currently taking children fishing from foster homes in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Florida.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As a small nonprofit our biggest struggle has consistently been fundraising. Year to year we have experienced difficulty covering larger expenses such as lodging, boat expenses, and meals. We are extremely thankful for all of our public and private donors, as 100% of these contributions make this trip possible.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Bob Wilder is the current president of The Larry Hatchett Fishing Foundation. He knew Larry Hatchett personally and has been involved in the organization since its inception. Over 25 years ago the foundation was at risk of dissolving, so he stepped in and took charge, as his connection to the foundation’s mission goes far beyond honoring his friend. He has always enjoyed giving back those in need, as well as encouraging others to do the same. Being able to witness the kids experience a worry free weekend and connect with others is what makes Bob a passionate and dedicated leader of The Larry Hatchett Fishing Foundation.
Liz Wilder Lemley is a Family Nurse Practitioner that works in Memphis, TN. She knew from a young age that her calling was to help others, and she is proud to do so in both her personal and professional life. She often puts the needs of others before her own, and always strives to positively impact the lives of everyone she meets. Liz is especially passionate about human rights, mental health awareness, and giving back to the community. Liz, alongside her family, look forward to continuing the foundation’s mission for many years to come.
What makes you happy?
Bob and (his eldest daughter) Liz can unequivocally say that helping others is what brings the most joy and happiness to their lives. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a child’s eyes light up as they are reeling in their first fish, seeing the beach for the first time, or as they make new connections with others that understand what they have been through in life.
