Today we’d like to introduce you to Constance Wooden Alexander.
Hi Constance, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a native Memphian, born and raised. I attended Memphis City Schools, now Memphis Shelby County Schools (MSCS). I also attended the University of Memphis and obtained Bachelor of Arts (cum laude), Master of Arts, and Juris Doctorate degrees. I am a first-generation lawyer and small-business owner at the Alexander Law Firm, a small boutique law firm in East Memphis.
I have been married for 15.5 years and have 2 teenage children. I have always known that I wanted to be an attorney since childhood and am blessed to have had the opportunity to live out a lifelong dream. I work on several panels at the Juvenile Court of Memphis and Shelby County, TN as a Juvenile Defender, Guardian Ad Litem, and Parent’s Attorney. I also work as a criminal defense attorney, personal injury, and family law practitioner in private practice here in Memphis, Shelby County, and West Tennessee.
I hope to have a positive impact on my clients as I assist them with their various legal issues while simultaneously bettering my community through community service and taking active leadership roles to make Memphis a better place. I am a member of various legal organizations in Memphis and Tennessee.
In my spare time, I love watching Dateline NBC, Fatal Attraction, Snapped, and various other true crime shows; spending time with my family; traveling, and cheering on the Memphis Grizzlies and the University of Memphis Tigers. My other interests are politics, finance, fashion, and technology.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It absolutely hasn’t been a smooth road. My father died 4 days before my 15th birthday. It was very difficult as a teenager going from a 2-parent household to only having 1 parent, and my older brother, in his early 20s, my mom, an elementary school teacher, and I, a sophomore in high school, had a difficult time adjusting, but we persevered.
Law school was at times very challenging, and it took fortitude and mental toughness to succeed and graduate. I also had my oldest child, my 14 1/2-year-old son, in my last year of law school, and became so ill toward the end of my pregnancy that he had to be delivered 3.5 weeks early. I had my second child, a daughter, while studying for the bar exam.
There have also been challenges in being a first-generation lawyer, a woman lawyer, and an African-American attorney in the white-male-dominated field of law. I have a great network of colleagues and mentors that have made that journey easier, and I am eternally grateful for that. My mother, who passed away in August 2021, was my biggest supporter and encourager, and her own love for her career as a veteran elementary school teacher fueled my passion to succeed.
My husband, who proposed to me the day before my first day of law school, has also always been a huge supporter of my journeys in law and life. My village is awesome!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Alexander Law Firm?

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love the diversity, soul, people, culture, and uniqueness of Memphis.
There is no place like Memphis in this world. We have awesome museums, food, festivals, sporting events, and parks. The consistently high poverty levels, which have been the same for generations, are a never-changing fact that I like least about Memphis, with so many of our children living in poverty.
I wish we could effectuate real change in terms of lifting more Memphians out of poverty.
