Today we’d like to introduce you to Denver Massey.
Hi Denver, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, I was around music pretty much all the time whether it was my mom singing as she cleaned the house on Saturday mornings or my dad playing guitar every other night. Eventually, I got into piano lessons, took about two lessons, figured out why to stop at that, and started trying to teach myself guitar. Around that time my parents started up a blues band and bought a drum set, bass guitar, and a few electric guitars.
So I figured now would be the best time for me to try to start my own band. I started writing songs and playing guitar more and had some of my buddies come over and we would start jamming and having a good time. This all started back in 2012, and with everything we played, we thought we were the next big thing. Looking back now I wonder what in the hell we thought we were doing.
After many years and interchanging new people into my band, I have finally got people I am super happy with and we started getting better shows, then more shows. I had written a few songs I was happy with by this point and started looking for a studio where I could go record my first single “Moonshine Dream” and it came out better than I had originally written it.
I put out a music video with the song and started seeing views on something of mine that I have never got before. I believe in about a week I was up above 2k views and I was ecstatic about the whole deal. I ended up going back and recording the first project titled “Mississippi EP” which is full of my experiences and tells the listeners a little about my life.
That was about a year ago and since then I have recorded two more songs that, by the time this is published should be released and able to listen to.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In terms of anything else in life, there have been times when the road seemed smooth, and I think that was really just me being comfortable with where I was at the time.
Where it has gotten rocky is when I make myself step out of my comfort zone and do new things to make myself as a musician and artist a little more diverse and understanding of what needs to be done at certain moments.
Whether that is with a live performance, marketing, or anything else that comes along with this always can have improvements and I come to find out that if you are comfortable, you are not growing.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an artist, songwriter, musician, fan of music, and much more.
In my mind, all of these things are really what any artist is. We love music, we play instruments, and we work on our craft even when it doesn’t seem like we are. In my case all of the songs that I write and record come from basic experiences that I have been through or are based closely on what I have been through.
It really is a sort of biography of my life more times than not when I am putting together a song. I was really proud of the first song I ever wrote and recorded, Moonshine Dream, about my high school sweetheart and how I remember everything being at the time.
It made me know that I can write at least a half-decent song that people can relate to. Then following that single up with my second single, Your Storm, about how the breakup went and how I perceived that as well. I love how songs can take a turn and let you kind of see the story coming together.
What are your plans for the future?
I do not usually plan too far into the future, besides keeping shows booked.
I try not to plan out too far, because in my experience in trying that I get overwhelmed. I really just keep shows lined up and focus on today and the next show up.
