Ebony Renee Lee’s Journey: From Adversity to Advocacy

I’m Ebony Renee Lee, a sophomore biology pre-med major at Lane College, deeply passionate about social justice, equality, and creating meaningful change within the African American and minority communities. My journey has been shaped by a blend of personal trials, academic challenges, and a steadfast commitment to my goals.

I was born to Eddie Lee and Nakosha Lee and raised by my grandmother Bessie Lee in Caruthersville, MO, where my foundation was built on resilience and determination. However, my life took a dramatic turn in the 10th grade when my grandmother, who was my legal guardian, caught COVID-19 and had to be put on hospice. This was a pivotal moment for me, as it forced me and my younger brother to move out of state to live with our aunt. The upheaval caused my grades to drop drastically, and I was faced with the daunting challenge of making up for lost time. Over the next two summers, I took intuitive learning courses and worked tirelessly to regain my academic standing, ultimately graduating on time despite the significant challenges.

These experiences fueled my desire to make a difference in the world, particularly in the field of pharmaceutical science. Witnessing family members battle diseases like cancer, diabetes, and AIDS motivated me to pursue a career where I could find and develop cures for such illnesses. My passion for science is deeply personal, and I am determined to contribute to the advancement of medical research to alleviate suffering in not only the communities I care about but the entire world.

At Lane College, I’ve taken on various leadership roles that allow me to make a tangible impact. Serving on the boards of the Pre Alumni Council (both national and local), the Campus Activity Board, and the Royal Court, I’ve dedicated myself to advocating for positive change and empowering my peers. My role as an ambassador for HBCU On the Move, Impressions of Beauty, and Shein has also been particularly meaningful, as it allows me to represent and promote the rich culture, history, and pride of historically Black colleges and universities. I take great pride in connecting with a diverse community, inspiring others through fashion and heritage, and contributing to the legacy of HBCUs.

In addition to my academic and leadership pursuits, I am also a passionate poet. My book, *”Ebony’s Echoes: Poems of Empowerment and Inspiration for Cultural Voices,”* is a collection of poems dedicated to empowering and inspiring African American and minority cultures. I use my poetry as a platform to address and uplift these communities, especially in light of pressing social issues such as police brutality. My writing is a powerful tool for advocacy, and I am committed to using my voice to effect change.

Looking ahead, I am excited to continue my journey, leaving a legacy at my HBCU by actively engaging in leadership roles, organizing impactful events, and advocating for positive change. Through my work, I aim to inspire and empower my fellow students to reach their full potential, carry forward the pride and traditions of our institution, and contribute to a brighter future for our communities.

Let’s talk about your work and career – what else should we know?
Currently, I work as a work-study student in the CVS pharmacy at Lane College. This position aligns perfectly with my academic and career goals, as I am pursuing a career in the medical field with aspirations to become either a pharmaceutical scientist, OB-GYN, or pediatric surgeon. To gain practical experience and advance my knowledge in the field of pharmacy, I am taking a pharmacy technician course here at Lane College. This program is equipping me with essential skills and knowledge that will be invaluable as I move forward in my career. What sets me apart in my work is my dedication to blending hands-on experience with academic learning. By the end of next semester, I will have earned my pharmacy tech certification and will be taking the state exam. This achievement is particularly meaningful to me, as it not only represents a significant milestone in my professional journey but also allows me to walk across the stage with other graduates—a moment that symbolizes my hard work and perseverance. Over the summer, I had the privilege of participating in research under the National Science Foundation at Rhodes College. The research focused on cell and molecular biology, and it was a partnership between Rhodes, my beloved Lane College, and Tougaloo College. This experience was invaluable as it allowed me to apply my academic knowledge in a real-world setting and contribute to meaningful scientific research. The opportunity to collaborate with other institutions and work alongside experienced researchers was both challenging and inspiring. My work and academic experiences are all steps toward my ultimate goal of making a significant impact in the medical field. Whether I become a pharmaceutical scientist, OB-GYN, or pediatric surgeon, I am committed to advancing healthcare and improving the lives of those in my community and beyond. What drives me is the belief that through dedication, education, and a passion for helping others, I can contribute to a healthier and more equitable world.

Marquita Gipson and Girls that Glitter Inc have been great to us and I know you’ve got a great relationship with them as well. Maybe you can tell our audience a bit about Marquita Gipson and Girls that Glitter Inc and your experience with them.
My experience with Mrs. Marquita and the “Girls That Glitter” organization has been nothing short of transformative. I first met Mrs. Marquita during Lane College Homecoming in October 2023. As an alumna of Lane College, she was there to support her alma mater, and we instantly connected. Her passion for empowering young women was evident from our first conversation, and I was eager to join the “Girls That Glitter” organization.

Being a part of this mentorship program has been incredibly impactful for me. The mission of “Girls That Glitter” is to encourage, empower, and motivate young ladies in boosting their confidence, self-esteem, and self-love. What makes the organization truly special is its inclusivity—it offers mentorship to girls and teenagers between the ages of 7 and 16. Additionally, the Glitter Girl 2.0 program is designed for young women in college and those transitioning after high school, ages 18-21. This structure ensures that every stage of a young woman’s life is supported, providing guidance and empowerment when it’s needed most.

What I love most about my mentor relationships within “Girls That Glitter” is the genuine care and commitment from Mrs. Marquita and the other mentors. They are always available to listen, provide support, and offer advice tailored to our unique situations. The mentorship goes beyond surface-level interactions; it’s about building lasting relationships that help us navigate challenges and celebrate successes.

Joining “Girls That Glitter” has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. The sense of community, the continuous encouragement, and the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally are unparalleled. I would highly recommend this organization to anyone looking to build their confidence, develop leadership skills, and be part of a supportive and empowering network of young girls and women.
