Meet Elly Hazelrig

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elly Hazelrig.

Hi Elly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I fell in love with photography when I was about 14. I started taking pictures on a 4th generation iPod touch, and upgraded while I became more passionate as the years went by. I moved a lot and worked in quite a few restaurants throughout my early 20’s, so pursuing that passion got put on the back-burner quite a few times.

Now flash forward to when things start opening up again in the beginning of 2021. I hadn’t gone back to the service industry since everything had closed, and was doing odd jobs here and there; one of them being working for my sister and brother-in-law’s photography business.

One of my friends reached out and asked if I would be able to help out with hosting for a new restaurant she was managing. So I said I’d help out for a few months.

Long story short, the restaurant also needed a photographer… so taking that job as a temporary host nudged me to pursue what I knew I wanted more seriously. And although I never thought I would do food photography- as I was always drawn to people- stopping time, and capturing emotion- I fell in love with capturing the art each Chef, and independent business owner, created and put in front of me.

Now I own my own business capturing everything from engagements, weddings, portraits, food, cocktails, product, etc… And I love doing all of it.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s definitely had its ups and downs. However, each challenge I’ve had to face (regardless of the “growing pains”) has taught me so much, so I am grateful for the challenges over all.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a photographer specializing in natural light photography. Everything from portraiture, engagements, and weddings – to food, cocktails, product, etc.

I’m proud of how eclectic my portfolio is, which is what I think sets me apart.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
This one is hard to narrow down. I feel like I learned so much in so many different ways. One thing I definitely learned was how to genuinely listen to people- which is hard to do when you don’t necessarily agree with them, I’m not going to lie- but, I feel like reform is more likely to happen when you’re patient and take the time to understand. Rather than, creating more division because you only care about making your own points.
