Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Steiner.
Hi Jack, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I moved to Memphis in 2016, not with the intention of staying long. 10 years later here I am. I opened a little store here on Broad Avenue and I host some artists and makers. In the back I have my shop where I do furniture work that has morphed into vintage mid-century modern stereo modernizations. One of the hardest businesses to describe that there’s wonderful retail in the front with some Memphis themed gifts, novelties, furniture and stereos.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Well we made it through the pandemic. I would say the real struggles have been post-pandemic. People don’t go out as much as they used to. There’s no doubt about that. But we offer a unique shopping experience. Always good music, sometimes two corgis, always good laughs and beautiful art.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I was corporate for 20 plus years and I did pretty well. But I’m more proud of Steiner audio than anything. I’ve done my professional life. I’ve built it from scratch and I’ve even started shipping stereos Nationwide. And I’ve done this with little fanfare. Just done it on my own word of mouth.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Don’t know that I have a favorite, but something that’s memorable and has to do with my current business is that I remember my mother’s vintage stereo console and her playing Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire and Petula Clark Downtown.
