Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Lyn.
Hi Jennifer, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m born and raised in NYC and grew up going to a lot of theatre. I’m a Gemini, so I talk and talk and talk (you get the picture). I grew up always creating something whether it was a drawing, making a necklace, or simply coloring in a book.
I’m not a big reader, but when I do read, it’s biographies. I think people are fascinating and I like to learn unique things about them. People might think I’m being nosey, but if I’m asking you questions it’s because I think you’re interesting.
A friend of mine had started a podcast and I started asking her questions about how to go about it (thanks Michelle!). Since my job (as an usher) had been shut down due to covid I thought maybe I can do my own podcast, but I had no idea what it should be about.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It started as a pandemic project (a bit late into the pandemic). I was talking to my actor friends who were out of work like me and we had some great conversations and I thought hmmm…this should be a podcast. I wanted to choose a name that anyone who knows even the slightest bit about theatre would know. That’s why I chose At This Performance. If you’ve been to a few shows, you most likely had that little slip of paper that was sticking out of your playbill/program telling you that someone or a few people would be covering for a role or multiple roles.
Picking the name was the hardest part for me. It’s been pretty easy even though I decided to go solo and not have a regular co-host. I do the editing, graphics, uploading, social media, etc. The challenge is really finding a time when both my guests and I have time to meet up virtually.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I like to ask unique questions that might surprise my guests and just have laid back conversations. I don’t like asking all of the same questions to my guests, that would be boring for me and if I’m not having fun how can I expect my guests and listeners to have fun.
I also have a yearly co-host, Sam Harvey (https://www.samjharvey.com/), who happened to be my very first guest.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think I’m a pretty good judge of character. I’m also really nice (or so I’ve been told).
