Meet Kristin Wolter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Wolter.

Kristin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always been interested in the Arts. My mother was an interior designer and instilled in me an appreciation of design. I was one of those crazy people that did all the design and flowers at my wedding which no one should do by the way. I did get the taste for floral design though and then I immersed myself into whatever I could learn. At that time there were no social media except blogs and magazines. So I would try and copy what I saw in Martha Stewart. I did a few events and weddings and was pretty much self-taught.

When we moved to Memphis, I was able to further my learning by working with a few local designers. After my second daughter was born I started doing more events on my own and grew my business. It went from working out of my kitchen, to a “She” shed in the back yard, to a 1500 square foot studio space.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has had a lot of ups and downs! Like I said, in the beginning, there was not a lot of information out there on how to run your own floral design business. Not any info on the business part at all. It took a lot of trial and error to figure it out and have a plan that was profitable.

Being a mother of two had its challenges as well. But It was important for me to show them that I was pursuing a dream.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have been a wedding and event florist for the last 13 years and recently opened a retail flower shop. We specialize in artfully created designs with a focus on color and texture. Our designs are intentionally created and we believe that the power of color and the natural world are essential parts of everyday life. I am most proud of creating a career that allows me to share that passion with others.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I am pretty stubborn and if I think someone thinks I can’t do something I will prove them wrong! LOL! This has led me to take risks even if I don’t really know how to do them, I figure it out as I go.
