Hi Kyhana , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began doing hair from home immediately after graduating from cosmetology school. After being fired from my job at Target, I chose to see it as an opportunity to focus on building my clientele. As my business grew, the traffic through my parents’ home became challenging, and I realized I needed to take the next step.
At the same time, I was working toward earning my cosmetology license. I failed the exam a couple of times, and each setback was discouraging. I took on other jobs for a while, but I never lost sight of what I wanted. I decided to take the test one last time and passing it became a defining moment for me. It reminded me that perseverance can turn setbacks into breakthroughs.
I spent a year working in a salon in Cordova before taking the leap and opening my own. Becoming a salon owner was a dream I had worked hard to achieve, and it marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, but I know this is only the beginning. There’s still so much more I want to accomplish.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Some of my biggest struggles have been building my clientele, learning how to work with different personalities, and figuring out the ins and outs of running a business. Each challenge has taught me something valuable and helped me grow both personally and professionally.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a licensed cosmetologist, and I specialize in a variety of services, although braiding is what I’m best known for. Hair is my art, so I put my heart into every style. I take the time to listen to my clients, understand their preferences, and create a look that feels personal to them. I believe that attention to detail and genuinely caring about my clients is what sets me apart.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I believe the beauty industry is only going to get bigger and better over the next 5–10 years. With new trends, technology, and creative techniques constantly coming out, there will be even more room for artists to innovate, express themselves, and take the industry to the next level.
