Meet Marcy Stagner of East Memphis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcy Stagner.

Hi Marcy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been a creator. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve had this uncontrollable urge to create, so art has always been a part of my life. I’ve painted, done pottery, metalwork, and ballet throughout my life. After my second son was born and had some health issues, I knew I needed a way to process everything, so I started painting again for the first time in years. My style has evolved and I love where it’s going. To me, the process is way more important than the product, so there’s a lot of emphasis on intuition on the route toward a finished painting. I call painting my “side hustle” because I work full-time as an Arts and Culture Director and have the privilege of creating some truly meaningful artistic experiences for the Memphis community. I’m so lucky to love what I do for work and to have a side hustle that feeds my soul.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to where I am now has been windy. I was a middle school teacher for about 10 years and the way I came into my current role as an Arts and Culture Director very serendipitous. I have had major bouts with self-doubt and impostor syndrome, along with my fair share of rejection and failure. To not get discouraged, and to use each of the lessons along the way to propel me forward and learn has been a vital part of this road for me. Each of the struggles I’ve had is like a treasure I place around me that holds a very specific teaching. It’s so important to learn and move forward.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am both a professional and an artist/creative. I work full time as an Arts and Culture Director and my side-hustle is as a painter. I sell current works as well as do many commissions. In my role as an Arts and Culture Director, I have so much agency to create something from nothing. Whether it’s an art installation, working with groups of artists, musicians, filmmakers, etc… I get to be creative and think about uplifting the city through the arts every single day.

What makes you happy?
My boys make me happy. They are 5 and 8 and the sweetest kids in the world. We love to be outside and go hiking, ride bikes, listen to music together at the Shell, and play basketball (they beat me) in our driveway. They truly brighten my world.
