Meet Marquese Hurst of Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marquese Hurst.

Marquese, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey in fashion hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been real—and it’s mine. From modeling and capturing my own shots to walking through the whirlwind of LA Fashion Week, every moment has taught me something. There’ve been times of self-doubt, wondering if I was doing enough or if I even belonged in the room. But I kept showing up, even when it meant pushing through setbacks or creating with limited resources. Fashion has always been my language—a way to express who I am and how I see the world. I’m still growing, still learning, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come and excited for what’s next.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road—every journey comes with its fair share of bumps. Some common struggles people face along the way include:
    •    Self-doubt and fear of failure: It’s easy to question whether you’re on the right path, especially when progress feels slow or unclear.
    •    Lack of support or resources: Whether it’s limited time, finances, or guidance, missing key pieces can make things a lot tougher.
    •    Burnout and stress: Especially if you’re juggling multiple responsibilities or working in a high-pressure environment.

   •    Rejection or setbacks: Not every opportunity works out, and handling “no” after “no” can be discouraging.

    •    Adapting to change: Shifts in direction, whether by choice or circumstance, can feel overwhelming or destabilizing.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My journey in fashion has been anything but linear, but it’s always been honest. From capturing my own looks to walking in LA Fashion Week, every experience—every high and low—has shaped me. While I currently work in detailing and am pursuing my bachelor’s degree after earning my associate’s, my vision for the future is rooted in both fashion and social work. I believe in the power of self-expression and the importance of giving back. Whether I’m styling a look or supporting someone through life’s challenges, I want to be a voice for authenticity, resilience, and purpose. I’m proud of how far I’ve come and even more inspired by where I’m headed.”

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
1. Build your network early—authentically
    •    Fashion is very relationship-driven. Go to events (even small ones), connect with classmates or coworkers, and be genuine.
    •    People remember how you make them feel. Be reliable, kind, and professional—it opens doors.

2. Internships are gold
    •    Even unpaid or short ones can lead to major opportunities. You learn the real-world stuff school doesn’t teach, and you meet key people in the industry.

3. Document your work
    •    Whether it’s styling outfits, creating mood boards, or behind-the-scenes shots—start building a portfolio or online presence. Treat Instagram or a personal site like your visual resume.

4. Know your lane—but stay versatile
    •    If you love design, learn the business side. If you love styling, understand photography. The more you know how other pieces fit together, the more valuable (and hireable) you are.

5. Trends come and go—style is personal
    •    Don’t chase everything. Develop your own aesthetic voice. People who stand out in fashion usually have a strong point of view.

6. Rejection is part of it
    •    Fashion is competitive and subjective. You’ll hear “no” a lot—but it’s rarely personal. Keep going, keep improving, and your people will find you.

7. Be ready to grind—but protect your passion
    •    The fashion world can be glam on the outside but intense behind the scenes. Hustle, yes—but don’t let burnout kill your creativity. Keep things that inspire you close.
