Meet Matt Montgomery of Supernova Music/Supernova Effects

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Montgomery.

Hi Matt, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been playing guitar since I was about 12. Fell in love with Music! I played in several bands in Northeast Arkansas. I repaired guitars and pedals for fun, and since I was broke and couldn’t afford good stuff. I moved to Memphis in the mid 2000’s and played in a few bands and did tech work for a lot of bands. I acquired a LOT of gear over the years and decided to open Memphis Backline rentals. I rented amps, guitars, basses, PA, for anyone and everyone. Lots of fun stories meeting all these people.

Then in 2019 I decided to open a Recording studio with a former buddy. It went well until 2025. So I left that studio and opened the music store. I’ve always wanted to do that, just never did. Now that its open and rolling its been great. Made a lot of new customers and friends.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not a smooth road at first. In the beginning it was hard to break into the Memphis music scene. I had made a lot of friends along the way and they really were the reason I kept trying. I decided I cant do backline by myself as there were others doing it on a much bigger level than me. So I thought what if I reach out to them and just offered my help and gear as something they can rent from me if they needed it. That is when Paul Redding reached out to me. He owned Keyboards in Black and White. They were the backline supplier for everyone it seemed. Paul and I became friends and he became my biggest customer. I got to go with him several times and meet a lot of my musical hero’s.

Paul introduced me to so many people. I got to make friends with a lot of artist and they would just call me for guitar and bass needs. Kind of weird getting calls form your Hero’s asking to use your gear. But it was great. I owe a lot to Paul.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We specialize in taking care of the customer first.
If you treat the customers right they will come back. We’ve made a lot of repeat customers along the way.

Another thing is that we have our own brand of Pedals called Supernova Effects. Now we are getting our own line of guitars as well.

I build all the effects myself. We have 12 different offerings. Everything from Overdrives, to delays, chorus, even multi-effects. These are being used by some of the biggest artist in the industry.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Come to the store anytime! We love to talk shop and share stories. We have a event on the 3rd Saturday of every month called Guitars and Coffee. My Girlfriend Jennifer “Red” Tyler hosts it. we provide coffee and doughnuts to anyone who comes in. We just sit around and play and sing and have a great time. Its a great way to meet other players and just enjoy music together.
