Hi Maya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My love for hair started at a very young age of 11 or 12. Although I never imagined being a hairstylist, I always knew that it was a gift I was given from God. All things hair struck my interest very early on, growing up in a prominent beauty shop era. It was later on in life that my love for the Art of Locs developed around age 19. I was primarily self taught in the beginning of my career learning from consistent practice. I was fortunate enough to have family and/or friends who allowed me to practice and strengthen my craft while doing their hair. I worked odd end jobs up until I was 22 and something clicked. Why not use my God given gift? Why not invest the equal amount of energy I invest into these jobs, into myself? Why continue to run from my purpose? I started working home based 2019, as most do. I worked from home for 2 years, while going through the process of getting licensed. I received my license in 2021. I moved into a suite in 2021 and my goal was to only be there for 1 year and by God’s grace I only stayed there for a year. I knew my purpose was bigger. I needed more creative control of a space. I wanted to create a space for people just like me, but from all walks of life. A space for fellow stylists’ to prosper and flourish. While at the suite, I met a Master Barber who had been cutting for 20+ years. We decided to trust faith and each other and opened a salon together in July of 2022 (The Majestic Parlor). We’ve been extremely blessed and fully operational for a little over 3 years now! Also, while working with and studying Afro Kinky hair I developed a product line in 2021. My product line, Luxe Essentials by Maya, provides nutrient based organic products. My products are sold both online(www.LuxeEssentialsbyMaya.com) as well as in person in my salon. My products are used by families throughout the US and hopefully all over the world soon!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Learning to navigate and learn from errors has been vital in my businesses remaining prosperous. I once struggled with money management, I’ve had trouble separating business and emotions, I’ve allowed self doubt to make decisions for me, I’ve done many things that I could’ve done differently, but I had to learn that dwelling over the past is more of a hindrance. I take away whatever I can learn from the situation and apply the knowledge to my future decisions. Another thing that is very important is learning how to outsource. While I am someone who tries to take on more than necessary, I had to learn not to overwork myself. I’m in this industry because it is simply something I enjoy doing! But I also enjoy so many other things as well. I need creative freedom, space to release. If it’s easier for me to pay someone to do it, then that is what I’ll do. whatever obstacle is, big or small, I always remind myself that the same God that got me here will get me through!

Under the name Luxe Locs by Maya I am a licensed Loctician specializing in the Art of Locs. I have been working with Afro Kinky Hair for 6+ years and I specifically work with Locs. I work with both adults and children above the age of 6. I have service those from all walks of life, whether special needs or those with disabilities. One of my main goals as a stylist is to create a safe, peaceful space for those to unwind from the stressors of the world. Somewhere where parents can drop their kids off in my care and trust their in good hands with me! I also am someone who practices holistic care on a personal and professional level which brought about my products Luxe Essentials by Maya. My products are derived from organic, nutrient based ingredients ensuring my clients are receiving hair care specifically curated for them. I currently have two products that I offer, Luxe Essential Oil as well as Luxe Hydration Mist which comes in two sizes. 90% of my clients have added Luxe Essentials to the everyday hair care routine. My products also come highly recommended by fellow stylist. I accumulated the knowledge I’ve gained over the past 6 years and implemented it into a product loved by many!

I study herbalism in my free time. Over the past few years I’ve gained so much information the healing properties of the earth. I’ve taken a few courses and read many of books and articles about if history of herbal and holistic healing. I am also a avid nature lover so I’ve grown herbs as well as foraged for them. I believe the earth serves as a source of healing, in many forms. I give my family, friends and sometimes clients herbal advice in hopes of educating and healing my people!
