Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Coleman.
Hi Melissa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In 1974 when I was a little girl, my parents moved to Memphis and opened a restaurant called the Whitehaven Ranch House. I remember having to stand on a milk crate in order to operate the register. In the 1980s the restaurant was renamed Marlowe’s in honor of my sister, and began to specialize in BBQ. My sisters and I were raised in the restaurant. While my sisters moved on with their career choices, restaurant work fit me like a glove. My father taught me everything I know in running this business. And just like my father, my favorite part about running a restaurant is getting to know my customers– locals, Memphis tourists, and Elvis fans alike. The locals are my friends in everyday life, through all the celebrations, little moments, and tragedies in between. The tourists are so much fun with their love for Memphis, Elvis, and BBQ. I love being at Marlowes just as much today as I did when I was 9 years old. At 61 now, life has been so rewarding and fulfilling in growing what my parents started in 1974. They are now retired and I’m in the process of training my 26 year old son, Michael, to take over as the third generation owner.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If it was a smooth road I missed it. Anything in life that is worth having takes hard work, tough choices, and a full time obligation. I watched my parents struggle to keep the restaurant doors open with the changing landscape of Memphis as a city. I could fully appreciate their persistence when the COVID pandemic changed our lives, and again the restaurant survived another challenge. The ongoing volatility in Memphis tourism affects us greatly. We do not take our doors remaining open for granted, and hope to remain a haven for tourists and locals in the years to come.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Marlowe’s specializes in Memphis BBQ– everything from brisket, pork, and unique items like BBQ spaghetti! Our menu also offers other homemade foods such as lasagna, hand-breaded chicken tenders, salads, and burgers. Our family owned and operated identity sets us apart and guides us in all we do. We love our neighborhood and have pride for the people of Whitehaven, with Marlowe’s being a staple of this area for locals since we opened. Many of our staff grew up near the restaurant, and we even have multi-generational history of staff members. It is such a special and full circle moment for me to start training a teenager at their first job at Marlowe’s, when their parents or even grandparents have worked at Marlowes. Since Marlowe’s is family run, we treat everyone as a part of the family. As a customer, we strive to make you feel welcome and appreciated every time you visit, whether that is once, daily, or yearly on your pilgrimage to honor Elvis. Spending time at Marlowe’s also means you might meet a friend or family member of Elvis Presley himself as we have the honor and privilege to host many events with living legends, especially during Elvis Week every August.
In addition to my work at Marlowes, my husband and I renovated a local home with a back patio that overlooks the horse stables and meditation garden at Graceland. I love finding cool Memphis and Elvis memorabilia to decorate the home, which operates as a short term rental on AirBnB. It is so much fun to wave to the Graceland guests as they leave the racquetball court!
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I love mining for natural diamonds in the volcanic earth of Arkansas. Haven’t found the big one yet!
