Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikita Thomson.

Nikita Thomson

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
In 2010, my father was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Some days he would come home in so much pain I would rub his neck and back, and he felt less pain and more at ease. At this time, massage never crossed my mind. I just wanted to take my dad’s pain away. In 2018, my father lost his battle with cancer. Over time, I found myself searching for my true purpose. At work, people would ask me to rub their tired shoulders or massage their scalp when I was doing hair, but at this time, it never crossed my mind that I had a true calling. One day, while complaining to a friend how much I hated my job, they asked what I wanted to do; massage rolled off my tongue with no thought in mind. I enjoyed making people feel better. Soon after, I moved to Atlanta and went after that dream I never even knew I had; once I finished school, I got my first job as a licensed massage therapist at a chiropractor’s office; this is when I truly learned how massage helps people. I found my calling and got the true satisfaction of easing the pain of others. In June 2023, I moved back closer to home, found a room for rent in a salon/spa, and started my massage business.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a business can be challenging. I had to learn everything from scratch: marketing, pricing, and boundaries. Everyone says start your business. No one tells you about those weeks or months you go without making money. How much money do you spend before the business qualifies for a loan? What is the importance of research and finding a mentor in your field? You’ll have many doubts, setbacks, and sleepless nights when starting. You must have a robust support system and a more substantial reason why.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a licensed massage therapist. I specialize in sports, therapeutic massage, and pain management. I’m proud to say I’m truly a therapist who listens and cares about clients’ needs. I go above and beyond to ensure the best service and comfort for the client. I’m a forever student, always willing to learn and improve my skills to ensure I do what’s best for my clients. Massage is not just a job or something to do; it is my passion and purpose.

Can you talk to us about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in luck but in opportunities. Everything happens for a reason, be it good or bad. We may not know the reason, but if we look hard enough, the reasoning will be shown to you. I started The Body Tek while I was in Atlanta; because massage therapists were such a sought-after field, I got complacent with just working at a spa. When I was hit with unexpected financial problems, I decided to come home. At the time, I wouldn’t say I liked the idea of coming back home, but coming back home gave me the push I needed to succeed. Memphis has a way of pushing you to let go of your fears and get your dreams.
