Meet Olivia Barakat of Wanderlust Wax Bar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Barakat

Hi Olivia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My interest in the beauty industry started when I was really young. It started with makeup, I loved anything beauty, my interest grew with hair and nails too. But one of my biggest insecurities was body hair, it didn’t matter if I shaved, you could still see the hair growing under the skin. Maybe a little silly to be so self conscious about it but I was a teenager. So when I was 15 my mom bought be a wax kit. I waxed myself and the confidence boost I had afterwards was great! I knew I wanted others to feel this confidence boost one day, so I told myself I was going to be a waxer one day. It didn’t immediately start that way though, I first started out as a professional makeup artist mostly doing bridal makeup at 19. I also working for a skincare company, that’s where my interest in skincare began. So in 2015 I went to esthetician school. After graduation I got hired at a waxing chain. I stayed there until I decided to open up Wanderlust Wax Bar in 2021.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Luckily, it’s been mostly smooth. But learning to run a “one man show” has been the hardest part. It’s something I’m still learning. Especially social media, I’ve really been working on that lately.

We’ve been impressed with Wanderlust Wax Bar, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Wanderlust Wax Bar I offer full body waxing, specializing in Brazilian waxes, that would be the most popular service by far. I use a hard film wax which makes the services less painful and quicker. I also recently started offering facials which I have been loving. For the facial services I’ve been using two amazing professional Korean skincare brands, Isov and StoryDerm, that I personally use and love. I also use a few products from the well known line Skinscript.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Honestly, Facebook groups with other professionals in your field is such an underrated resource. Many other estheticians are solo like myself, it makes asking questions and learning about how to run your business so much easier.
