Meet SaRoan Gaston of South Memphis

Today we’d like to introduce you to SaRoan Gaston

SaRoan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I, SaRoan Gaston, was born in Memphis, TN but was raised with a ‘Memphisippi’ lifestyle. That means I had a country, green thumb, family-oriented kind of home training. Growing up, something was always changing whether that be addresses, schools, friends, etc.; so it had always been difficult to keep a constant in my life up until I became an adult. Being as young as I am, 20 years old, I feel as if I lived many lives and have so much to offer and learn from others around me. I used to want to leave the city, believing that nothing would ever come from putting my time into where I was born. I was so very wrong. Memphis is where I got most of my inspiration from, especially in the social world. I mean, I saw Southland Mall rebirth twice, which to me is very dedicating and tenacious. Now, I feel as if I had not explored Memphis enough, it is definitely something I want to fulfill before I ever think to change cities.

As of now, I work with a very open minded, creative and lovely group of people; Wholey Goods. Wholey Goods is a smoothie, juice and herb bar located in Whitehaven. Our goal is to make you whole; holistically and naturally. These are one of the many places in Memphis where you would go in and say, ¨ We need to see more of this ¨. I am also a Tarot Reader and creator, I have been doing readings for a little over two years now. I have brought light to a lot of people and their situations they inquire about. I could not tell you what ushered me to begin this journey, it is one of those things you just feel. My eldest brother told me he had a dream that one of his sisters would get into Tarot, so that just confirms it all for me.

In the future for myself, I would like to be in the makings of teaching my own classes regarding: spirituality, tarot, herbs, gardening, yoga, meditation, health, etc. Not just for the city, but for the generations to come as well. We need to connect more, learn how to barter more, and learn more about self-sustenance. In terms of the city, I want the crime to drop significantly and for the litter and trash to not be a common theme in our city. I do have high hopes for all of this ´cause I know we all can do better.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not, I am a victim of domestic violence and racism. I am sure I don’t have to mention financial issues because who is not struggling with money nowadays? Considering I moved a lot between Memphis and Mississippi, I got to see two very different worlds in every aspect. The most apparent and common difference is the educational system and the infrastructure of how certain cities are built. You can tell Southaven, MS is built for success or at least a smooth functioning society. Whereas, in Memphis you’d see nothing but unkempt churches, trashed parking lots, corner stores and fast food joints. To me it doesn’t make sense because we get a lot of tourists for Graceland, you would think Elvis Presley road would be far better than it is now, physically and commercially. As far as racism, I had experienced it more as a child than I do as an adult. Part of me wants to believe it´s because people are changing but the reality is that I didn’t have a voice as a child. I didn´t know when to speak for myself, regardless of any situation. Learning my voice and learning when to stand up for myself is a struggle I know many children and people my age dealt with and or are still dealing with because of their environment.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As stated before, I am a Tarot reader and Creator. I make jewelry, I paint, I am also learning how to crochet as well. I am a member of Wholey Goods in Whitehaven which is a smoothie, juice and herb bar. If I had to say, I think I would be most proud of my job at Wholey Goods. Wholey Goods gave me a space to expand and express myself and I thank them for every part. While I was already a creative being, not every employer has this space and time to pour into their employees like Wholey Goods. My intelligence and creativity is definitely what sets me apart from others. A lot of people are very smart but intelligence is not always common.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was definitely quiet and kept to myself, unless I was outside or with people that made me comfortable. Made straight A´s and didn´t get into much trouble at school. As far as home training, I had a ´Memphissippi´ kinda lifestyle, meaning I experienced country life and city life equally. I had always been interested in magical things whether it be video games, TV shows or toys. I am unaware of it but I´m sure I have a lineage of women who practice root work or some form of spellwork.
